InMotion Hosting Launch New VPS S-Class Hosting

We take a look at the new InMotion Hosting VPS S-Class Hosting — We take a look at the resources, support and generally give you our thoughts on the new plans.

InMotion Hosting, a web hosting provider, specializing in "business hosting" has recently announced the launch of a new VPS Product that gives more RAM, Storage and Bandwidth as well as an upgrade to SSD storage. These upgrades are set to provide customers with a significant boost in speed and performance.

According to InMotion Hosting the VPS Upgrades are:

Consistent with our mission to bring customers the most comprehensive web hosting experience possible with top-of-the-line service and support [ ... after ...] in-depth product evaluation including intensive market research, security and scale concerns, fundamental feature analysis and customer surveys and feedback. In short, we wanted to make sure we are bringing you industry-leading Virtual Private Server hosting that meets all of your needs and addresses all of your website’s digital requirements.

Todd Robinson, CEO of InMotion Hosting said:

Our new VPS hosting packages match up against any competitor on the market and our implementation team can get all types of customers up and running immediately, addressing any questions customers might have upon purchase [..] Simply put, I am confident we are offering top-of-the-line Virtual Private Server Hosting to fit the web needs of just about any buyer on the market at an affordable price.

The New VPS S-Class Hosting Plans

There are three plans for the new InMotion VPS hosting, named VPS-1000S, VPS-2000S and VPS-3000S with prices ranging from between $44.99 and $154.99 per month, although there are significant discounts for the first month. You can see a summary of the different plans, including the discounted pricing below:

What about CPU Usage?

One thing that strikes us about InMotion VPS is that they do not designate the number of CPU Cores you can use. This makes it very difficult to compare pricing points with other hosts (for example $150 at Hostnine will get you 8 CPU cores, 10GB RAM, etc.) We have no way of telling whether the VPS-3000S will allow similar resource usage, more or less. We raised this with InMotion Support who had this to say:

QUESTION: How many CPU cores do your plans have. I can't see any mention of it, so it is hard to compare it to other providers when trying to make my decision.

06:00:28 a.m. [Robert H] Hello Jonathan, my name is Robert H, thanks for contacting us!

06:00:49 a.m. [Robert H] There are no dedicated cores on the Shared and VPS plans

06:01:24 a.m. [Jonathan] what is the CPU usage policy on VPS?

06:02 a.m. [Robert H] As long as you are not running to the point that you are affecting the other users we do not care how much you use

06:02:39 a.m. [Jonathan] So a VPS-3000S plan has same CPU usage as a VPS-1000S?

06:02:54 a.m. [Jonathan] And same priority?

06:03:31 a.m. [Robert H] No, the VPS3000 has higher priority and will be given more consideration in CPU usage

06:05:59 a.m. [Jonathan] ok thanks

06:06:11 a.m. [Jonathan] Have a great day

The only reference to CPU usage in their terms and conditions is:

CPU Usage. Customer agrees that Customer shall not use excessive amounts of CPU processing on any of Company's servers. The maximum number of files is 50,000 per account. Any violation of this policy may result in corrective action by Company, including assessment of additional charges, disconnection or discontinuance of any and all Services, or termination of this Agreement, which actions may be taken in Company's sole and absolute discretion. If Company takes any corrective action under this section, Customer shall not be entitled to a refund of any fees paid in advance before such action.

Essentially, this is so vague that it gives InMotion a blank license to say arbitrarily "enough is enough". Sure, other hosts may not say specifically what level of usage is too much, but at least, you get some indication of the usage allowed so you can track your usage and do some planning on whether upgrades will be needed. That being said, they do have a knowledgebase article that explains how to view your current CPU usage that does have a 100 percent utilization indication.

Update (21st September 2015): The Knowledgebase article no longer exists. However, they have some articles here that will help you monitor any server load issues.

See below:

7-day-cpu-spike

We cannot be sure whether this is relevant to their VPS product, but certainly something to bear in mind. Despite their terms and conditions being vague (which applies to all their products, they do seem to be putting a definitive limit on their knowledge base articles).

InMotion VPS Hosting Autumn Special Offer

InMotion is currently offering a promotion that expires at the end of September. While normally you can get 20 percent off the first months hosting, at the moment you can get the discounted prices shown above for your first invoice (i.e. the whole year). While we have been fairly critical of the lack of information regarding CPU usage, the VPS-3000S plan for $74.99 per month with 200GB SSD storage and 8GB of RAM looks very appealing. You can see full details of the VPS plans here, as well as the Autumn Offer.

You can see all our InMotion Coupons and offers here.

Final Thoughts

The SSD hosting and higher RAM allowances are the direction we would love all VPS hosts to go. It is a great upgrade to their product. With the lower price for the first month, and with InMotion being one of the few hosting companies that offer a 30-day money back guarantee on their VPS products there is certainly no harm in trying them out if you like the look of the plans, especially if you sign up with their current Autumn Discount.

The lack of guidance on CPU usage is raising a big red flag for us. Although it is likely that a reputable (and highly regarded) company like InMotion is likely to give ample resources how can you be sure you are getting value for money?

Are you an InMotion VPS customer? What are your thoughts?
