WP Engine User Portal Makeover — 2015 Recap

WP Engine listened to customer feedback in 2015 and gave the User Portal a makeover, and these are some of the best features of the new User Portal.

WP Engine listened to their customers’ feedback in 2015, and they used that feedback to make their service even better: they received criticisms about the layout of their User Portal, and so they gave it a 2015 makeover.

We’ve rounded up some of the best changes that WP Engine made to their User Portal, changes that will make the user experience much easier to navigate and to use effectively.

New Install Navigation

Before these alterations, in the old User Portal, customers had to use their left-hand navigation column to switch between different installs they had on their accounts.


This was useful and functional — until customers found that they needed to manage a large number of different installs all in their one User Portal account. With this update, it’s now easy to find the various installs, view them, and navigate to them to make any alterations that are needed.

Now, if customers go to the WP Engine in the User Portal, they will find a dark blue bar, as in the screenshot below, which they can just click to see all the installs that are listed on their WP Engine account.

If customers have over ten installs, they can see the recent installs all listed on the left, and this will give you very quick access to the entire last installs that you visited. This new search box means that customers can now find a single install by name, and then make any changes or updates that they may want to. user-portal-update.2

Simplified Design

To go with the newly overhauled install navigation, WP Engine has now simplified the left-hand install navigation only to contain links to the install that the customer is currently working on.


Customers might notice that these pages have gotten a light, new design that makes the new-look User Portal better and more friendly for users, and also much more adaptable and responsive to different screen sizes. This added responsiveness also means that the new User Portal design works a lot better on different devices, such as mobile devices.

WP Engine said on their website about the new User Portal design before the launch:

“We can’t wait for you to using these new features in the updated user portal when we launch it in the coming weeks. We hope these improvements make it even easier for you to navigate around the User Portal.”

Main Features of The New WP Engine User Portal

  • Monthly Reports: This report outlines for customers all the visits to their website within their WP Engine account for a selected period. They will find summaries of the top static and dynamic requests, bot traffic and browser user agents. They can also view visits based on countries and mobile versus nonmobile devices.
  • System Status: This shows customers live updates on feature relating to WP Engine such as updates and changes.
  • Blog: The WP Engine blog will be consistently updated with posts that revolve around WordPress, technology, and WP Engine. Any new products or features will have their own posts outlining their features.
  • Interactive Tutorial “Help Me”: WP Engine have started a partnership with SIDEKICK, and have created a collection of useful tutorials and guides that help customers understand how the various components of the User Portal work together. They also contain step-by-step guides about how to complete various tasks.

How The Main Dashboard Page Looks

user-portal-update.1 The overview page is central to the WP Engine User Portal, as it allows customers to glance easily at information about their account, and shows them various features that they can use to make changes.

  • DNS Information: Inside the Install Stats box, is the server IP and also your CNAME, which can be used to configure the customer’s DNS.
  • Visitors: The bar graph in the display rolls a 30-day average and along with a rolling 30 day total for the amount of bandwidth used by the visitors.
  • Bandwidth: This line graph displays the rolling 30-day average, and a rolling 30 day total for the amount of bandwidth the visitors used.
  • Storage: This will display the total amount of disk space used by the specific install that the customer is looking at.
  • Usage CSV: This CSV file will always display daily usage status around objects that are served, data served via CDN, the server processing hours, and also dynamic hits to the server.
  • SFTP Logins: Here customers will find the SFTP usernames and the environments that they have access to. Also, along with the server address and the port number customers will need to use when connecting via SFTP. Customers who want to can also select to add additional logins, set passwords and file various path restrictions for them, in case they want to give limited access to a developer.

These changes should make it easier for WP Engine customers to give their website visitors a better experience, and to run their online presence with ease. They will also be able to use the additional tutorials to explore the various features of their WP Engine accounts and to improve their websites in new ways.
