WP Engine Announces Scholarship Opportunity

WP Engine has announced that it is offering a four-year scholarship to the Limerick Institute of Technology for the upcoming academic year to support a student who is passionate about technology.

WP Engine has announced that it is offering a four-year scholarship to the Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) for the upcoming academic year to support an undergraduate student who is "passionate about technology".

WP Engine is web hosting company that offers fully managed WordPress Hosting. Founded in 2010, WP Engine is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and has offices in San Francisco, California, San Antonio, Texas, London, England, and Limerick, Ireland. They have a customer-based consisting of over 50,000 companies across 130 countries. They have raised over $18 million from institutional investors, including from Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and VaultPress.

In September 2016, WP Engine opened a new innovation and technical support center in Ireland, supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland, and resulting in the creation of 100 jobs over three years as a results. The new center is designed to expand an existing presence and cement their place as the industry's largest R& D organization in order to accelerate the WP Engine managed WordPress platform.

It is no wonder that with the current investment in future technology, that WP Engine is willing to invest in the brightest and best minds, providing a four-year scholarship worth around €3,000 per year (at 2016/2017 rates). The new scholarship will be named the "WP Engine Future Technology Leaders” scholarship" and will be open to any student pursuing a technology related degree.

The scholarship will be part of LIT’s [email protected] student scholarship fund. This is fund that aims to alleviate the financial burdens experienced by students so they can fully concentrate on their education. Students can apply for the scholarship by emailing for details at [email protected]

“Just as WP Engine believes the Web should be universally accessible so too should opportunities for higher education,” said April Downing, Chief Financial Officer of WP Engine. “As a company, one of our core values is a commitment to giving back to our communities. With this scholarship, we are making an investment to inspire and help students at LIT excel in their studies and become future leaders in computing and technology by breaking down the financial barriers that prevent them from entering these fields.”

President of LIT, Professor Vincent Cunnane said:

“This program puts Higher Education within the reach of students with the ability and ambition to undertake it, but whose financial circumstances preclude them. This represents a really important part of our ethic to be able to make 3rd level education accessible to all."

It is unclear as to the extent of the involvement that WP Engine will have with the student as the Scholarship announced by WP Engine is by virtue of a donation to LIT's [email protected] fund.

They do mention in the news release that "One of the unique aspects of the [email protected] program is that it matches donors like WP engine directly with the students they support", so it will be interesting to see if WP Engine take an active roll to cultivate the student to joining their team after qualification.
