1and1 Internet, or 1&1 Internet, began as a small German company in 1988, founded by Ralph Dommermuth. It took over T-Online's marketing activities, which was a T-Com service that was run online. 1&1 expanded into the UK in 2000 offering its hosting service internationally. It quickly established itself as a leading web host provider to private users and small to medium sized business. In 2003, it further expanded web hosting service to the U.S.A.

1&1's Cloud hosting is an extremely flexible and configurable solution. You can choose from one of their seven preset plans, or configure the exact resources you need for your project, fine-tuning CPU's, RAM and SSD storage to suit.

Furthermore, all plans come with a choice of being unmanaged or fully managed, although management does restrict access to root.

When signing up you can choose your OS, and if managed what hosting stack you want, such as NGINX. We discuss this more in our Expert 1&1 Cloud Review below.

Editor's note: We have not tested this web hosting provider, and with the lack of user feedback, we will stay fairly neutral with our opinions.

So impressed with the level of customer service provided by Shaun John and his team - totally over and above what was expected.

1&1 expert Review 2017

bad support 1and1This looks like a really great web hosting provider, at least on paper. However, troubling reports about their support are filtering through which may make you think twice about using them.

The pre-configured stacks on the managed plans look really good, and will make it extremely easy for anyone to get started with 1and1 cloud. You can either pre-install WordPress, NGINX + MariaDB + PHP 7 or one of many other variants.

With management only costing $5 per month, it makes you wonder the extent of support that would be provided, bearing in mind the criticism by users of the adequacy of their support.

This service is probably better suited to those who do not require support, and are happy configuring their own stack.

The good things about 1&1 Dynamic Cloud

#1 Managed

You can add ful management to your server for just $5 per month. Root access is restricted, but 1and1 will fully manage your operating system. The managed packages are based on Docker container technology.

#2 SSD Storage

Their SSD storage is stored in a Storage Area Network (SAN). This has significant benefits in terms of administration and disaster recover, thus making it more reliable. Because the SAN can be easily reconfigured or moved from one server to another without having to physically move the storage devices.

You can read more about the benefits of SSD Hosting here.

#3 Deploy a VM in 55 seconds

When you create a cloud server you can choose from one of the pre-configured servers or alterntively customize the exact amount and type of resources required. You can preinstall applications and various windows and linux distributions. The server then provisions within 55 seconds.

#4 Software Development Kits

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are now available on GitHub for various programming languages such as Python, PHP and .Net, allowing you to interact with the Cloud Platform via the REST-API.

#5 Plesk ONYX

1and1 uses Plesk, a very respectable and popular control panel for web hosting (in particular Windows Hosting). If you prefer cPanel, then take a look at their Cloud Hosting where that is an option.

You can try a demo of Plesk by clicking the "Live Demo" button here. A screenshot of the control panel is below:

#6 Choice of Linux/Windows

Both Linux and Windows operating systems are available on their VPS.

#7 Firewall

Easily create powerful firewall rules directly from your control panel.

#8 Choice of Data Center

You can host your cloud server in either USA, Germany and Spain.

#11 Hot-add resize

You can increase your server's resources without downtime.

#12 Shared Storage

You can share information between servers via shared storage volumes accessible using NFS or CIFS protocols.

#13 Full API

Should you wish to automate any aspect of your cloud deployments, you can take advantage of 1and1's API.

#14 Backup

Create snapshots to capture the status of a virtual machine. You can restore the previous status at any time, or only partially merge it with current changes. Backups can be created at any time, individually configured and saved forever. This applies to backups of all systems. Create server images manually or automatically (daily or weekly). Afterwards you can set up new servers from your created images with minimum effort.

#15 Advance Monitoring

Easily monitor your server usage, including CPU, RAM, Network and Ping.

#16 Winner in Cloud Spectators Price-Performance Category

In March 2017, 1and1 were named as the winners of Cloud Spectators price performance category, beating companies such as Digital Ocean, Google and Rackspace. A chart showing the results is below, but you can read more about the benchmark survey here.

1and1 said in a statement:

Despite the low customer cost, 1&1 is able to achieve such great results by using only premium hardware for their virtual machines. For example, Intel Xeon processors, virtualization software from VMware or SSD storage from NetApp SolidFire are part of the basic setup of every VM, and allow every 1&1 Cloud Server customer to get the most out of their project.

Some negatives

#1 Reports of some bad support

A quick look around the web, including the user reviews left by our readers above (and on our reviews of their other services) are awash with complaints. We discussed this more in our VPS hosting review.

#2 No live chat support

Live chat can be a very quick and convenient way to access support. While you can telephone their support or submit a ticket, the lack of live chat may be an issue for some.
