1and1 Internet, or 1&1 Internet, began as a small German company in 1988, founded by Ralph Dommermuth. It took over T-Online's marketing activities, which was a T-Com service that was run online. 1&1 expanded into the UK in 2000 offering its hosting service internationally. It quickly established itself as a leading web host provider to private users and small to medium sized business. In 2003, it further expanded web hosting service to the U.S.A.

The company offers a broad range of hosting solutions, including shared hosting, Microsoft SharePoint hosting, Ecommerce hosting, virtual private servers (VPS), dedicated servers, dynamic cloud hosting, domain name registration and its own proprietary website building tool called "1&1 website Builder" that has mobile features and analytics.

Over 5,400 employees work for 1and1 in thirteen data center and office locations. Simon Yeoman currently represents operations in the UK as General Manager. Robert Hoffman is the CEO operating from Germany. The company serves more than 11 million customers and has 19 million websites and domain names on 70,000 servers housed in five different data centers located in the United States and Europe.

Editor's note: We have not tested this web hosting provider, and with the lack of user feedback, we will stay fairly neutral with our opinions.

I cancelled my account just 24 hours after purchase.WHY? I still couldn't log into use what I paid for despite several calls to technical support. All they could tell me was that it was a known issue and they have escalated it.

I am a web developer and work with many hosts and registrars. Trust me, 1and1 are easily the worst. THey will block you from doing even the simplest of tasks and their online support is never available. When calling you will often be kept for over an hour on the phone while you wait to speak to someone.

Since signing up with 1and1 I have been getting cold call from spam companies.

I asked where they got my number. Low and behold 1and1. I got no reach. No business. No way to monitor who was viewing and being active. So I canceled my account on 1/15 of this year. Apparently no record was made it so they billed me. I called agai. Next month and finally got my whole package canceled. Last week they claimed I still owned. No. They just blame me, and all three people I spoke to said it was my error.

Despite sorting it I get 5 more calls who never leave a voicemail. They then tell me my site is up and running, despite me cancelling it, and they end up just hanging up on me instead of resolving it. Poor manners, shotty business. Never again. Worst experience ever. I guess I will stick to Facebook.

After a year I realized that they were taking more than double the money I agree to pay. What is even worse is that they added on to my account a new php service that I didn't order, and sent notification they had done so saying that if I didn't want the service I need to cancel. WHen i complained the support guy just got upset. Whatever you do, and as many other people have said... don't give your credit card number to this dishonest company.

I have used many hosting companies. In fact more than 8, including shared and vps hosting. Out of all the ones I have used 1&1 is by far the worst.

Please search in google and check how everyone is having problems with email being sent from forms.

Support is stupid. They barely know anything and just ask you to call their phone support. Their support is supposed to be good but all they do is send you youtube videos from youtube for newbies.

One of the support guys was very rude as well, and all i could do was end the call. Such as headache all of this.

I have 23 websites hosted on a pro unlimited shared account. The up-time and speed are fine. The problem I have is their call centers. Hard to hear on a bad phone line often and sorry to the staff there trying to communicate with poor English skills or accents just makes it a frustrating time. Also take my advice.

If you have a serious security issue going on with one of your websites and you need help don't try to solve it with frontline staff! Ask immediately (demand it) to speak to the "security team" who I found to be on a clearer line and spoke fluent English. ie They were in the USA.

do not be tempted by their discounts or positive reviews you might see mentioned. after joining their shared hosting every support call you makes is so frustrating as the person you speak to has no control or ability to help. Support calls are just a way to setup an internal ticket which can take days to get a response.

1&1 expert Review 2017

bad support 1and1This looks like a really great web hosting provider, at least on paper. However, troubling reports about their support are filtering through which may make you think twice about using them. The 1and1 reviews left by our users seem to confirm this.

That being said, 1and1 offer a wide range of plans, including some great upgrade paths to cloud sites, VPS or Dedicated servers.

Furthermore, they offer some exceptional offers making their initial pricing extremely competitive. You can find details of all their promotions here.

The good things 1&1 offers

We wil first look at some of the more positive features that 1&1 has to offer:

#1 Some Great Shared Hosting features applicable to all plans

Their standard hosting has a number of great features that you may not find at other hosting providers, such as Geo-redundancy. Here are the highlights:

  • SSD storage for secure, reliable data storage that is managed and backed up. On their standard shared hosting, SSD storage is limited to the database storage. Read more about the benefits of SSD storage here.
  • Geo-redundancy - Your website is simultaneously hosted on two separate server clusters in two geographically separate data centers. If the first location is unexpectedly interrupted, your site will automatically continue running in the second location- without any data loss.
  • Simple DNS management in the 1&1 control panel for easy registration and transfer of your domains.
  • Google Sitemap integration for instant optimization and indexing of website pages.
  • 24/7 customer support. Available by phone and email.
  • Drupal, Joomla and WordPress 1 click install for quick CMS setup.
  • CDN. The Content Delivery Network allows localized delivery of content from over 62 data centers worldwide. Content is served from a server closest to the location for optimal speed for your visitors. The CDN is available on the Pro Plan.

#2 Premium Features available on their Pro Plans

Their higher priced "Pro" plan has a number of additional features:

  • CloudFlare Railgun - Railgun compresses previously uncacheable web objects up to 99.6% by leveraging techniques similar to those used in the compression of high-quality video. This results in an average 200% additional performance increase. For more information about CloudFlare general read our more indepth article.
  • PHP 7. With PHP high speed caching your website runs twice as fast compared to older PHP versions. You can read more about PHP7 here.

#3 Great features and performance available on their WordPress Plans

Their WordPress hosting plans are altogether more powerful, utlilzing NGINX, fully SSD storage, and PHP 7 with OPcache. If you are using WordPress is makes much better to choose their WordPress hosting plan, as it costs exactly the same as their standard plans.

  • NGINX. Security is kept in mind for all users. The NGINX service protects users against DDOS attacks and retains high-performance durability.
  • PHP 7 with OPcache - PHP 7 is much faster than older versions of PHP. Its high speed is achieved by opcode caching, also known as OPcache.
  • Managed WordPress Solutions. The WordPress hosting service includes WP expert support, automatic security updates, and preinstalled plug in configuration
  • Unlimited Traffic. All plans allow unlimited visitors each month no matter how big your community grows.
  • Project Management. Allowing 1, 5, or unlimited WP projects on the Basic, Plus, and Unlimited plans respectively
  • A Free domain. One free domain is provided on all hosting plans
  • Generous SSD storage. Secure and reliable storage with backup is provided with 50GB space on the basic plan, 250GB on the Plus plan, and unlimited storage on the Unlimited plan.
  • Webspace Recovery - Allows you to easily restore files in your hosting account. Create backups for up to 6 days of your data.

#4 Latest Windows Server and more with their Windows Plans

Their Windows hosting plans look great on paper, with all the latest versions of the various technologies being used (Windows Server, ASP.net etc). My only criticism is that their RAM allowances look a little low, so that may be something to keep an eye on.

  • 1&1 are one of the first web hosting companies to use the new Windows® Server 2016.
  • 1 Free domain is included for all users.
  • 2GB Email Storage on the Unlimited plan, with unlimited space for the Plus and Pro plans.
  • Unlimited storage space for all plans.
  • 100 email accounts on the Unlimited plan, and an unlimited amount for Plus and Pro plans.
  • Content Delivery Network for Plus and Pro plan users, plus 2GB RAM for the Pro plan.
  • 24/7 U.S. based phone and email support.
  • Sitelock Basic service is included in both the Plus and Pro plans, with an SSL certificate included in the Pro plan.

#5 Great introductory pricing

The range of hosting plans on offer certainly provides a good choice of features for the basic blogger or freelance entrepreneur, and some features offer some attractive benefits to the small business owner. The introductory offer can seem like a bargain but the usual monthly cost after 12 months is an average cost of web hosting with moderate extras thrown in. If after sales service is important to you, or you are looking for good customer support, it is perhaps not the most valuable or worthwhile hosting service available.

#6 30-day Money Back Guarantee

1 and 1 provide a 30 day trial with a money-back guarantee. If you are not completely happy, you can request a refund within 30 days by calling the helpline. Domain registration fees and Dynamic cloud server costs are not refundable.

The Negatives

#1 Some bad reports about their Support

There are quite a few negative reports about the level of customer service provided. They do offer phone and ticket support, but just a quick look around the web, including the user reviews left by our readers above are awash with complaints.

The support team stay active on Twitter and do respond to some users. However, the issues with customer service seem unresolved, and this raises some concern about the level of support provided to clients.

Despite being rated "A" with the Better Business Bureau out of 38 reviews left by customers, only three were positive. How they managed to get an A rating is a little concerning, but many of the complaints seem to be about poor billing practices, such as sending bills to customers who left months, or in some cases years ago.

#2 No live chat support

Many hosts do not offer the full range of support methods, but for us live chat is one of the more important ones. But this really is just personal choice, so if you are happy with just ticket and telephone support then all is good.

#3 Custom Control Panel

1and1 use their own custom proprietary control panel. As such, it may feel unfamiliar and difficult to navigate at first. The following video produced by 1&1 provides a quick overview:

If you are dead set on using 1&1, and want to use cPanel, then you may wish to consider their Cloud Sites.

#4 No Uptime Guarantee

We are actually surprised about this. With their Geo-redundancy that we mentioned above, all customer accounts are automatically synced to a second location, so that if the server goes down for any reason the other server will take over. Surely, with such a setup they can offer some kind of guarantee or service level agreement?
