A Small Orange Reviews

Like so many other web hosting providers purchased by EIG, a great web host has been turned incredibly bad. Check out the rating over time graph in the review dashboard, and you will see a clear contrast when our user reviews turned from high praise to outright disgust.

We kept a close eye on A Small Orange after the purchase, and although some negative reviews started to appear, things were still very respectable, and indeed we used their Cloud & Dedicated servers for some time after the purchase ourselves.

We first took note on how bad things had become, after the Arvixe migration debacle (another company that EIG bought), and how there was a total break down in the support provided by Arvixe, lost files, broken website resulting in the sacking of the majority of the Arvixe staff. This has relevance to A Small Orange, as it was their support and management team that was charged with picking up the pieces. As you can imagine, at that time, things has got so bad (support response times in excess of a week) that A Small Orange was always going to face a losing battle.

Unfortunately, the policy of EIG to move all their ticket support to India has, and unfortunately, still is a disaster.

Editor's note: We hate to be negative about hosting providers, especially when we have past dealings with them, but for the time being we recommend you avoid EIG owned hosting providers. Fortunately, you can filter out all EIG-owned hosting providers in our Hosting Review tables.

A Small Orange Shared Hosting Review

A Small Orange Shared Hosting Plans — A choice of Standard or Business plans

If you have read our warning about A Small Orange Support and reliability being subpar, you may be surprised by some of the seemingly positive comments about their hosting plans. If you are lucky enough not to have server issues, then the plans themselves, at least on paper look pretty good.

Unless you need PCI compliance (you wish to store credit card details on your server, rather than use a third party processor), or want to ensure the servers are not overcrowded, then you will need their Business Hosting. Otherwise, their standard hosting plans look pretty good.

Let's take a look at the plans, list the features and then we can move on to the more detailed discussions:

Shared Hosting:

Tiny Small Medium Large
SPACE 500 MB 5 GB 15 GB 30 GB
TRANSFER 5 GB 50 GB 150 GB 500 GB
WEBSITES 1 Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
FREEDOMAIN No Yes Yes Yes
FREE SSL No No No No
PRICE $2.92 $5 $10.00 $20.00

They offer four different plans,  which mainly differ in the amount of Storage and Bandwidth, although their cheapest "Tiny" plan only allows one domain to be setup on the hosting.

As you can see all but the Tiny Plan come with Unlimited Domains, and 24/7 Email and Live Chat Support.  All plans use SSD storage, which is at least 15 times faster than the mechanical counterpart making the website seem extremely responsive.  Other features of the plans include:

  • 90 day Money Back Guarantee — This is one of the longest in the industry, giving you ample time to try out the service.  Note that domains are not included in this offer, so if you refund after taking advantage of a free domain, the standard domain cost will be deducted.  This is pretty standard practice.
  • cPanel — They provide the standard cPanel control panel.
  • Fully Scalable — Easily upgrade and downgrade as you need.
  • Two months free — When you pay for a year up front, you get two months free hosting, as well as a free domain.
  • Unlimited everything else — Unlimited Emails, Databases, Mailing Lists, Email Forwarders, Subdomains, and FTP Accounts come as standard.
  • Daily Backups — Automated daily backups are taken, although we do recommend taking your own off-site backups as well.
  • Ghost blog hosting — They are one of the few shared hosting providers that have Node.js installed.  This means the new Ghost Blogging Platform can be installed.
  • Ruby on Rails — Unlike most hosts that use a cPanel plugin for Ruby (which is not always updated to the latest version), they use Passenger for their Ruby, meaning it is always up to date with the latest Gem's installed.
  • US-based Data Centers — A Small Orange's data centers are located in the US in both Dallas, and Dearborn, Michigan. Unfortunately, you cannot choose the location of your server.

If you need a little extra, you may wish to consider their Cloud VPS plans, or alternatively their Clementine Managed plans, which have the power of dedicated resources but are completely hands off. That means that while you will receive cPanel details, you won't have to worry about server configurations or anything else. We think this is ideal for people that want a bit more power, but don't want the hassle of setting up and managing the server environment.

Business Hosting:

Startup Small Business Enterprise
SPACE 40 GB 50 GB 60 GB
TRANSFER 600 GB 800 GB 1,000 GB
WEBSITES Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
FREEDOMAIN NO No No
FREE SSL Yes Yes Yes
PRICE $20 $40 $60

These are virtually identical to the standard hosting plans, but they have less accounts on each server and are PCI compliant (including regular scanning). This allows you to store credit card details on your server, rather than having to use third-party processors such as PayPal.

They are also one of the few shared hosting plans that offer PostgreSQL Database Support.

5 Reasons to use A Small Orange Shared Hosting for your website or Blog

#1 Easy to Use Control Panel and admin. area

A Small Orange has a rather smart Client area for support and billing, and gives you access to their extensive knowledgebase and video tutorials.  You can see a screenshot of the client area below:

Customer Area ASO

For the management of the website, they use the industry standard cPanel, and as you can see from the screenshot below, they have some nice added options, ... such as PHP selector, Pagespeed Optimizer, CloudFlare one-click install, SiteLock security, R1Soft backups access, as well as their Ghost Installer (via Softaculous):

A Small Orange Control Panel

One thing we like about them is that they have kept the standard cPanel styling, rather than jazz it up like some other hosts do.  Sure whilst we like the look better of some of the custom styles, having the standard version makes it easy to follow any cPanel guides or tutorials as well as find what you are looking for very easily.

#2 No "unlimited everything"

Most companies will try to pitch you the line that they have 'unlimited everything' and that just simply isn't true about the websites bandwidth and disk space. They have clearly separated themselves from the pack and provides you with a clear-cut picture of the disk space and bandwidth they offer. However, you can purchase additional bandwidth for your shared hosting at just $0.50 per GB per month.

#3 SSD Driven

Experience blazing fast shared hosting with their fully SSD driven shared hosting environment. SSD drives are at least 15 times faster than the traditional mechanical drives used by most other hosts and are more reliable as well. Typically, you will only see SSD driven hosting on a VPS or Dedicated server, and even then this is only a recent trend. This explains the lower storage space within the plans than competitors, but believe us ... it is worth it.

#4 Different types of hosting

They you a platform of different web hosting options to choose from varying in price and outlook. Cloud VPS, Dedicated servers, re seller hosting, business web hosting and shared web hosting are all offered at reasonable prices. You, therefore, have an excellent upgrade path should you need it.

#5 Node.js and Ghost Blogging Platform Support

They are one of the few companies that offer this kind of support on a Shared Server. Ghost is an upcoming blogging platform that is quickly gaining traction. You can read more information in our review here, including instructions for setting up Ghost blogging platform.

What are the negatives of using A Small Orange Hosting?

#1 Extremely slow, terrible support

As mentioned in the introductory paragraph at the top of this review, A Small Orange's support has become a disaster zone since it was taken over by EIG, especially after the Arvixe migration debacle where they had to take responsibility for dealing with that mess.

Ultimately, the complaints (and there are many of them) boil down to the following issues:

  • Unresponsive live-chat
  • No telephone support
  • No responses to email or tickets

This means that any issues you have with the server or your website are amplified. Where a company such as SiteGround will respond to tickets in 10 minutes, and deal with any issues straight away resulting in any downtime or other issues being kept to an absolute minimum, A Small Orange may not respond for over a week.

You are strongly advised to look at the User Reviews at the end of this review, but also, just take a look at some of the following tweets directed at @smallorange:

#2 Account suspensions without notice

There are multiple reports on Twitter of ASO suspending accounts of its users. Coupled with the slow customer support, rectifying any issues can take considerable time.

Do we recommend A Small Orange?

A small orange bad supportNo.

Users report that the support at this company is so bad that you will be lucky to get a response to your support request by ticket within two weeks.

You only have to check out the rating over time graph in the dashboard at the top of this page and read the user reviews below to see how their acquisition by EIG has caused severe quality issues.

Sure, on paper, the SSD and optimized servers look great, and as a previous customer of A Small Orange they did work very well. Unfortunately, if something goes wrong, or you need help you may find none available. If your website is offline due to that issue, then you may find your website offline for many days, if not weeks.

We don't say this lightly; Avoid this web hosting provider.

Editor's Note (12 March 2017): While the advice to avoid this hosting provider still stands, EIG (the parent company) looks to be making significant changes. This year they plan to fire many of their existing support staff, with the purpose of hiring new staff in a central location in order (we think) to significantly improve their support service.

A Small Orange Frequently Asked Questions

What sort of support is available?

All plans include 24/7 Email + Live Chat Support. Many other EIG brands have discontinuted Email \ ticket support in favor of phone support, so we wonder if A Small Orange will be doing this too in due course.

Can you advise which hosting plan I should choose?

A Small Orange is one of the few hosts that use SSD storage for increased performance. As a result, a number of resources with each plan is more limited and defined. The Tiny Plan for instance only comes with 500MB storage and 5GB Bandwidth. For most small websites this is ample, but while your website may only take around 200MB you need to consider the space that might be attributable to any custom backups you may take, and any files created by your Caching Solution (see our W3 Total Cache Settings for recommended setup).

The Tiny Plan also only allows one website to be hosted, whereas the Small Plan and above offers unlimited websites. There are no differences in CPU or RAM Allowance between the different shared hosting plans. If you need an SSL certificate and PCI compliance you can choose one of their Business plans starting at $20 per month, noting that they have lower account densities on these servers for increased performance.

Ultimately, though, at the present time we do not recommend any plans due to the lack of support offered by A Small Orange.

I am currently furious. My account was set to expire at the end of an annual billing cycle, and I wrote several e mails that I wanted a link to continue service. I was fully cancelled anyway, THEN they returned my e mail, asking if I'd like to set up a new account. I set up a new account, which still didn't work, as I was not told that I needed to transfer certain files. no help. No phone contact, no computer support that's worthwhile, also curt, unfriendly, and you have to pry answers out of them.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. ASO used to be a great (one of the best!) choices for low cost shared hosting, but since the EIG buyout, it has continually slid downhill. Avoid at all costs.

Worst Hosting Company!
-No Customer support.....No Customer Support..... NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT......!!!!
-Tech Support on Live Chat are drones without the ability to help in any way, completely useless.
-My problem was that my email stopped working. Their answer was to have a Senior Tech Email me....
I repeated, I believe about 6 times, that my email was not working so emailing me would not work and each time they would tell me that a Senior Tech would get back to me via Email.
-NO PHONE SUPPORT!!!!!

So I moved my site to a new host. On the phone with the New Host they were able to resolve the issue with the email, which apparently migrated with the Cpanel BU, in about 5 minutes.

If you do cancel, which you should run to do, make sure you replace your credit card info with a gift card info, perhaps one that has a $1 on it. That way if they try to bill you they can't. There is no way to delete your Credit Card info. Also make sure to tell them to DELETE ALL Billing and Credit Card Info.

My advise is to stay as far away from this company as possible. And for anyone who has had horrible dealings with them report them to the Better Business Bureau.
These guys should not be in business.

This company doesn't even deserve a 1, their's is a total Zero for ALL services. And NEVER should be a choice in the rating.

ASO worked well for about a year and then they went downhill fast. This year, my service was interrupted 4 times - once for 24 hours. Support was not existent - "our technicians are aware of the problem and working on it" "no, we don't know when it will be fixed". There's no possible way they have an up time of 99.9% - and their guarantee is nonsense.

I used to love ASmallOrange. They were one of the best hosts out there for customer service. As of late, they are total crap. Their hosting is spotty. Their help is terrible. Their live chat is worthless. Nobody knows anything. I really would steer clear of this terrible company. It's too bad because they truly were wonderful at one time.

Read all the reviews of A Small Orange before you decide to pay for their services! Do you see a common theme?

ASO is a company that does NOT put any priority into providing support or service to their customers. The ONLY way to contact them is via their Live Chat or submit a ticket. If you're new to this, let this be a RED FLAG. If a company doesn't want to talk to you, then they really don't care. I even had one chat specialist rudely end a chat while I was in the middle of pleading with him to help me resolve an issue. They will also promise things in a chat and then never follow through. Also beware, they will try to charge renewal fees (without notification) 15 day prior to the date they say they are due.

I have to echo the sentiments of so many others. I regret ever doing business with A Small Orange and recommend that everyone STAY AWAY from this company.
(By the way, Host Gator, iPage, BlueHost, SiteBuilder.com, and others are all owned by the same company as A Small Orange. I don't know if all of them operate in the same manner, but be aware before doing business with any EIG company.)

I've been with ASO for 10 years. Until the last couple of years it had generally been excellent. Features and price were good, customer service and issue resolution were excellent. From the point they withdrew the ability to set a priority on a support ticket things got difficult. Then chat filled that void with urgent matters being actioned quickly. But then over the last two years, more outages, slow response, slow patching and updates. In the last six months, support is ridiculously slow.

For the last three weeks on shared hosting it's not been possible to resolve "localhost" - pretty fundamental. They unlinked etc hosts from the bind-mount so there is effectively no host file within a user's account, which causes all kinds of problems with scripts, cron jobs, mysql, etc. Chat operators just keep saying "we apologise" and "it will be fixed soon". The senior technicians are yet to respond to the support ticket. This would take them 30 seconds to fix.

ASO is nothing like the company it used to be. Time to move to a new provider.

If you are thinking of writing a blog, I recommend ignoring all of the promotions sent to you by A Small Orange.

Promotions from this company imply that payment to them is necessary to register the domain needed to write a blog. It is not necessary to register a domain with A Small Orange to write a new blog.

My recent experience with A Small Orange has been filled with exasperating frustration. This company automatically charged my bank account to renew my domain registration without advising me until the transaction had be processed and posted to my account. When I cancelled the domain registration account within the required time period, the company refused to refund the renewal charge.

The Terms of Service posted to the A Small Orange web site state that the company will bill their renewal fee, “up to 15 days prior to your renewal date.” The invoice billing my renewal is dated 20 days prior to my renewal date.

The Terms of Service state that the domain registration account must be cancelled, “at least 48 hours prior to the renewal date.” It states that if the customer does not cancel during this time period, the customer will be billed for the renewal and is responsible to pay the renewal charge. I cancelled my account 3 days prior to the renewal date.

The Terms of Service require the customer to contact its billing department by email if there is an error made by A Small Orange in their billing. When I attempted to email the billing department, my message received only an automatic generic message directing me to the company’s web pages for customer support and the chat page. The two days I attempted to connect to these web pages they were not functioning.

The $65.00 renewal fee taken from my bank account pays A Small Orange, a year in advance, for use of a domain that is cancelled and not in use. The $65.00 collected by the company amounts to a donation from a customer who will receive no service in return for the money paid.

When I read through the Terms of Service for all of the services offered by A Small Orange the general message becomes clear. The proprietors of the company, Garret Noling and Mohsin Kamal, designed and operate A Small Orange so that it will exploit a popular social trend, mislead and confuse the prospective customer, promote a service fee as necessary when it is not, collect as much money as possible, and perform absolutely no customer support for domain registration customers.

The proprietors of the web site even boldly and arrogantly state in the last sentence of paragraph 6.7 of their Terms of Service, “ In addition, A Small Orange reserves the right to refuse a refund at any time for any or no reason.”

You can register a domain with other web hosting services such as Wordpress.com for a much lower fee. You can write a blog without the frustration of associating with companies like A Small Orange.

Completely worthless company, stay very far away from this company of amateurs and charlatans (kindest way I can put it).

I have had hosting accounts with many different companies, some good and some bad. These guys are in a league of their own when it comes to terrible hosting services. For the purpose of this review and brevity I will focus on my main two problem areas.

Support - does not exist. Almost convinced that their support team are bots. You will receive the exact same canned response over and over again. Literally the exact same words be it email or chat message. I received the exact same email three times in a row in response to my responses. Then same thing via chat. If they are not bots, then it's just people copy and pasting canned messages, what's the point.

Uptime. This is a real problem area, particularly how they handle this issue. Their servers went down, my site was offline and it wasn't until a few days later when a client asked me about an unanswered email that I realized it was down. DAYS, not minutes or hours, DAYS. No one contacted me or sent an email to my alternate email address informing me of the issue. Every provider I have ever had, has had the courtesy and professionalism to give me a heads up when it's going to take a few hours to resolve a more challenging issue. Not these guys. When I contact their support department, they mentioned they were working on it and would get back to me. Never got back to me (obviously not surprising), a week later (A WEEK for god's sake) server and site were still down. At which point I migrated my site to another service after losing a decent amount of business and revenue.

In sum, just avoid this company at all cost, not worth any savings you may get. You're better off paying a couple bucks more and going with a real company.

The mark of a good hosting company is not necessarily its size, but the quality of its services and customer support. A small orange horribly falls short of the mark in these two critical areas. My site was down every other week costing me a great deal of business and hurting my reputation. Customer support which I later learned was outsourced to India is shameful. I had become accustomed to waiting 10-15 minutes between responses only to be asked to elaborate my query. My three years with ASO is an experience I want to quickly forget. If you care about your business stay away from this hosting company.

I would never recommend ASOJ to friends, family or anyone I know. The reason is quite simple: after years of being a faithful customer, they took my entire website down, my livelihood, without warning on Christmas Day because my site reached a bandwidth quota. I didn't get the notification until I had over 100 customer complaints about my website being down until the next Monday. I had to give out tons of refunds. Considering legal action against ASOJ...DO NOT use this host!!

WARNING!!!!

ASO is a horrible company. They took my site down for not renewing the URL/domain name, but I paid for the URL/domain name and ASO applied the payment to a different URL – they then refused to rectify their mistake. It’s not the money that is the issue here ($22), it’s the fact that I paid the bill on time and they screwed it up and then refused to even acknowledge that they made a mistake.

Contacted their live chat on three different occasions and was told three times “it sucks to be you”…

Don’t use this company, you’ll regret it. They basically are con-artists, the only reason they put all the crap on their site about their “great” customer service is to con you into buying their services. Once they’ve got your money, you can go and F*@& yourself as far as they are concerned.

Seriously, I’m so upset right now, I’ve copied the live chat conversation and I’m posting it to my Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest accounts etc. so I can let everyone I know what a POS company ASO / EIG is.

I’ve spent over eight months perfecting the CSS on my wordpress site to get it perfect, as soon as these creeps figure out that you’ve put some time and effort into your site they start thinking “now we’ve got ’em where we want ’em” and they start playing their BS games.

Stay away from ASO or any other brand owned by EIG (Endurance Investment Group).

I’ve parked about 10 or 11 domains at ASO over the past 4 years and have never had a bad experience. Support has been good the few times I’ve needed it. For the most part I’m running WP based sites and my hosting package has no problem running multiple installations of WP simultaneously. Not sure how others are using it, but it works great for me!
+ PROS: Very little downtime, handles multiple installations of wordpress, and speeds fast enough for me.
- CONS: Invoicing has always been confusing to me. I'm not sure why as it should be straight forward, but I just can't follow what's happening when invoices arrive.

So I started using this service because it was affordable. But recently I had to cancel my account because I couldnt afford to keep it running. Unknown to me. They still billed me the full amount for a service that I had cancelled. After multiple emails and complaints about getting a refund they have still not issued my refund. The customer service is really bad and if you bring up issues like mine they will stop responding to you. Don’t waste your time and money on this company because you’ll either end up disappointed or your money stolen.

I am so frustrated and disappointed by your company. Ever since you decided to remove the live chat feature from the iphone about a year ago, i now cannot contact support to get things fixed fast. I have to carry a laptop around all the time since my server goes down 4-8 times per month. Submitting tickets doesnt work anymore, nobody cares to answer them. Your customer service is a complete joke. I came from bluehost because i thought and hoped to find better and faster customer service. Being with you guys is like being in a jail, no communication abilities and solve problems only when i have a computer in front. I have lost dozens of thousands of dollars in advertising thanks to you. I am on the road and have no ability to contact you via chat now because you decided to remove communication from mobile phones. Way to go, no phone to reach you, no support ticket and no ability to chat. Speechless.

4th day since ordering hosting and domain, still no Welcome email, nor response to polite note 2 days later. They DID manage to send several ‘upsell’ efforts, which we won’t be availing ourselves of. Considering decent price ($150 for 3 yrs incl 1 yr of free domain reg), have to give two thumbs down, and recommend that webmasters look elsewhere. Very rude not to respond to email several days. Unfortunately, after almost 10 years of being with ASO, I’ve decided that I have to find a new provider. The services were always fine for my minimal consumption, it was cheap, did what I needed, etc. However, support is now awful. I currently have one open ticket that’s 3 days old, no response. I have another open ticket that’s 1 day old and the only response I received was wrong. I’m going to be switching to someone new, not sure who yet.

That used to be amazing, but customer service is now crap. No more phone support. Chat support is not knowledgeable and if you open a ticket, it takes forever to be even acknowledged. Will be switching away from ASO.
+ PROS: SSD servers are fast.
- CONS: Customer service is crap. No longer has phone support.

Cancellation Reason: Worse customer service ever!
During sign up process the information provided was that I could enter the EPP number of the domain I want to transfer from GoDaddy after completion of sign up process.
When I returned to the site to update EPP number, they asked for $15 fee to transfer, which I was willing to pay BUT the web interface kept saying product not in the cart to complete transaction.
I chatted with their agent who was not helpful at all and opened a ticket
After 2 days I opened another ticket but no response.
For such a simple thing when you are acquiring a new customer, they have such BAD customer service... I just cannot imagine what it will be like afterwards. And they do not have any phone number to call either.
Also, they said 90 days money back guarantee and now while cancelling they said my account was non-refundable... simply amazing customer service.
I have NEVER experienced such bad customer service from anyone for new customers in my life even not from telephone service providers who are the worst.
Gosh!

Pros: Attractive plans

Cons: Worst customer service

Stay away. Their policies for billing are ridiculous and they are unwilling to work with a long and loyal customer such as myself. I have left their services and will not be returning.

Pros: Their services were good, cheap and simple to use.

Cons: After cancelling through their site, paypal subscriptions was still set to send the payment. ASmallorange would NOT give the money back. They received money for no services and refused to provide a refund. Because of this I recommend staying away from this company.

crap support. no telephone. right now I have three open tickets, each several days old, and have had to migrate my business email off of ASO onto google due to SMTP server blockage and 18+ hour delays. will be taking my business elsewhere...

Pros: cheap, maybe the cheapest ISP around for a small website. ($35/year for the "tiny" plan)

Cons: crap support. no telephone. right now I have three open tickets, each several days old, and have had to migrate my business email off of ASO onto google due to SMTP server blockage and 18+ hour delays. will be taking my business elsewhere...

Don't do it. Their customer service is terrible. I was billed for a product that I did not receive and, despite emailing several times, it took them a month to respond. Do not use this hosting company. Do not give them your money.

Was using this company for 5+ years but they just lost my business over renewal fees and very poor billing/customer service which resulted in my site being down (despite the fees being paid.)

I DO NOT recommend this company.

Pros: This was a most decent hosting company until the last few months; control panel is good, web host was stable, speed was good, rates fair.

Cons: NEVER HAD A PROBLEM until recently, in particular the billing department. I have been with "A Small Orange" for 5+ years, but recently, after hounding me FOR MONTHS to pay my renewal fees (the did not do this in the past), I paid the $65 fees for my web hosting and domain only to have BOTH cancelled and my website be down. Furthermore, upon requesting assistance for several days, I got ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE until I canceled the account.

I DO NOT recommend this company.

We moved to A Small Orange from our previous host after doing extensive research. Even though ASO was a bit more expensive than some other hosts, we went with them as they had great reviews and promise a "Homegrown Website Hosting" service with great support.

Oh boy. This company, who is now a part of the huge EIG conglomerate, is a complete mess.

We've had numerous issues with them. Here are just a couple of them:

- When we reported spam that we were getting from a 3rd party, they locked OUR account, without investigating who the abuser and who the victim was.

- The downtime is extremely frequent, and happens weekly.

- They will often block outgoing emails via SMTP, using MailChannels

- They deleted a bunch of files on our hosting, without letting us know. This was apparently due to a false positive by their updated malware scanner. They did not contact us to let us know that they had updated the scanner, or that any files were deleted. When this was reported to them, they took TWO WEEKS to get back to us, despite numerous emails.

- If you have issues with abuse or mail deliverability, live chat or regular support CAN NOT and WILL NOT help you. They will create a ticket and forward it to the abuse team, who does not work 24/7.

On top of all that, their tone and their approach is nonchalant and unapologetic. They really sound like they do not care about their customers, and it shows.

A Small Orange has been a huge disappointment, and hosting with them is simply not worth the hassle. We've had numerous hosts over the years, but A Small Orange takes the prize as one of the worst web hosts ever.

Avoid.

support live chat cannot be used anymore until today. no contact number can be contacted. raised a couple of tickets but nobody reply the ticket. Asked for refund, nobody response.

it 's a nightmare for everyone who is going to use their service.
i just hope that i can claim back the money that they have charged to me.

STAY AWAY. A Small Orange is now just another brand of Endurance International Group (EIG), along with HostGator, BlueHost, Arvixe, HostNine, and close to a hundred other names. EIG has a reputation of taking over great companies and destroying them.

The reviews here reflect my own experience: ASO was a great company until taken over by EIG in mid-2014, and for a little while after. They've killed it now.

EIG in my opinion deserves to be driven out of business, but instead they have become a multi-billion-dollar corporation. Do your research and do it well, as they now seem to be actively trying to hide it when they take companies over.

Pros: Customer service still responds. But the response may just be, "sorry, can't help you."

Cons: Being out of online business for a week or more at a time.

I am sorry to report that ASO is not providing to their customers what they sign up for. The service may be cheap but is totally unreliable. The customer service is non existent and in case anything goes bad you get locked out of the control panel which means that you can't do anything on your own.

Just stay away from them!

Quite possibly the worst hosting service on the internet today. I have used a variety of hosts, all the big names, and some smaller ones. NONE of the other hosting providers compare to the terrible service offered by ASO.

Not only is there ridiculously frequent downtime (bordering on once every 3 weeks at this point), it's impossible to get ahold of anyone from their crew, and when you do they usually have no real answer. "Yes sir, this is unacceptable. We understand." "We are doing our best, but we don't have an ETA on when your site will be back up" "Yes, we understand that you want to switch hosting providers." - I have never had a problem solved over chat or on the phone with one of their representatives, and I've called roughly 15 times over the course of the year.

How can you possibly charge any money for this service. It would be understandable if they offered FREE hosting, otherwise it's unacceptable.

Pros: no pros

Cons: Name it, they probably do it terribly.

We run a busy photography studio, and our site averages 300 unique visitors per day. We signed-up with A Small Orange hosting and their Small Business hosting plan ($400 USD/year) largely because we thought business accounts are treated better than their $2/month accounts. We also wanted to be hosted by a small company, as our experience with large hosting companies has been negative. Apparently, we were wrong on this assumption. We pay for site uptime monitoring, and receive an e-mail every two days that our site is down, usually for about an hour. Their support is also slow and e-mail only. When we initially signed up, they offered tech support by phone. Over the years, that option has disappeared. When our site was recently down for a number of hours consecutively, during our busiest season, all we could do is e-mail them and hope and pray. The final nail in the coffin was when they e-mailed all of their customers on Black Friday, about a ridiculous deal, where they offered 75% OFF on all hosting plans. Upon inquiring, we were told the deal is only valid for NEW customers. Who on Earth does this? Who e-mails a deal to current customers when it's in fact only valid for new customers? After speaking to Anna J. in sales, they tried to get us to upgrade to a more expensive plan at a discounted rate. No thanks.

I had always been an advocate for ASO, but I cannot anymore. After constant server outages and terrible response times from support staff I can only advise others to look elsewhere for their hosting needs. Yet another fantastic company that is being run in to the ground now by Endurance International Group (EIG)

Pros: Fast servers and a plethora of features

Cons: Nginx Caching (that they won't turn off) and terrible support. No phone number to call and a constant wait on online chat. Server uptime is not as advertised. ASmallOrange is not the reliable hosting site it once was. I wouldn't recommend them anymore.

I have used asmallorange.com for my hosting for about 2 years now... in that time period they have managed to have 7 days that were over 12 hours of downtime. That is NOT acceptable for any business website, so unless you are hosting a blog or something that is not involving purchases, then you should expect ASO is going to cost you more than you might save from their deals. Yesterday was one of the biggest days of the year for my sales and this incompetent hosting company handed me 23 hours of downtime followed by 6 hours of uptime and now it's down again... once again hurting my sales and reputation of my business. Furthermore during those 23 hours, I could not get ANY INFORMATION WHAT SO EVER about what was going on and when it would be resolved. The tech support people have no information for anyone, all they will do is create a ticket for you... but when you ask them ANY question they have NO ANSWERS. I asked a lot of questions and every single one was answered with "I'm sorry but I have no more information" - if you are running a business you would be a fool to use ASO to host it, take it from someone that's lost at least $1000 in sales due to their complete incompetence and lack of concern for the businesses that rely on them.

Pros: They have some good deals, but it's not worth it if you are running a business... the downtime will eat up all your savings and much more.

Cons: Friendly but completely incompetent staff, LOTS of downtime. Do not trust ASO for your business website.

MAKE THAT MINUS A COUPLE OF STARTS.

WITHOUT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE,THE COMPANY IS USELESS AND CLUELESS.

Cons: This has got to be the WORST customer service EVER! No hope of every talking to a person. I simply needed to change my cc for automatic billing.....I could have done the paperwork for a mortgage in less time. The chat window rep DID NOT pay attention to my request. I had to remind him several times WHY I was calling.

I didn't want to give my cc info on line. I sent an email last week saying I was replacing my cc and wanting to give them the info. No one responded.

They have NO phone support even for billing.

Yes there are many good things but customer service is the MOST important thing any company offers. The greatest product in the world is useless without REALLY QUINTESSENTIAL CUSTOMER SERVICE. ASO GETS A BIG FAT 'F'
IN THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARMENT. RUN,RUN FAST TO ANOTHER HOSTING COMPANY

This is by far the worst company I've partnered with ever.
SIx days of constant downtime and yet not a single reply either on my ticket, or on my tweets. It is like begging for clients to go away.
They have live chat, support via twitter, support via facebook, ticket system and yet, the do not answer during crisis to any of these media.
Totally frustrating.
One should avoid at any cost if one has even the slightest expectation of building a stable website. Their support is very polite when they are about to tell you that your website is down, but they never give you a reason and are very slow at troubleshooting. Again, they managed in less than a year to be a shadow of what they wanted to be. Such a pity.

Pros: Quite cheap ( You get what you pay for )

Cons: Frequent downtime
Awful support

There has been something going on recently. I've been with them for almost a year, and recently I've had several:

"Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

Apparently it's about some .htaccess file error having many deny rules due to the Wordfence plugin. It's all Greek to me … just thought I'd mention it.

Support can take from a few minutes up to 10 hours.

They are cheap ($50/yr), so hopefully I'll be convinced to stay on another year.

Worst ever. Please don't put your website on this server if you want people to be able to access it.

Pros: NONE.

Cons: Horrible website hosting server!!! Makes a site completely inaccessible, and just slaps an error page in your face when you try to access a site that's being hosted by them. Down times happen suddenly and for ridiculously long amounts of time. I can no longer access a site after it switched to this service. I'm extremely upset by this.

It always surprises me that not more people know about ASO. I guess they don't spend a lot of money on web or TV ads. I have been a customer of theirs for more than 5 years. My experience with them has been awesome. There are probably cheaper hosting services out there. However, given their incredible customer service, I really don't think it's worth it. They give you an immediate response any time, and then they get the problem fixed. They stay with it until it has been completely taken care of.

Anytime anyone asks, I always recommend them.

One of the main things that really stands out to me when it comes to A Small Orange is the company's incredible customer service. They always exceed my expectations. I have emailed their ASO support staff many times: when my server loaded slowly, to switch domains, when my site got a virus. Each time, the response from them was lightning-fast, and they told me how my issue could be fixed and offered to do it for me.
