Site5 Reviews

Read our expert opinion of Site5, along with unbiased reviews from 115 real users

Site5 has for a long time targeted developers and designers, despite any real developer orientated features.  Prior to their purchase by EIG they appeared to be undertaking a lot of development to improve their platform, but it not much of that came to fruition.

Historically, Site5 was one of the best web hosting providers out their, highly regarded by a loyal band of customers. For this reason, you may find many positive reviews around the web that will seem in contrast to our more up to date, and honest opinion of them. Furthermore, if you check the rating over time graph in the dashboard above, you will see that their service has been going downhill for some time.

Editor's note: Since their purchase by EIG, Site5's support has deteriorated significantly. An example of how bad it is getting can be found in our detailed article about their sister company, Arvixe.

Site5 Shared Hosting Review

Site5 Shared Hosting Plans allow wide choice of data center locations

If, and this is the operative word, Site5 didn't have such bad support, then on paper their biggest strength is the sheer number of locations offered for their hosting. That being said, since their purchase by EIG we have heard that some users have found their websites migrated without warning back to the US-based data centers. Furthermore, on their signup page, the only location available is Central US.

What we like about Site5

  • Experienced  - They’ve been in the business since 1999 and by extension have quite a bit of experience in the hosting industry.
  • Various Plans - They offer you an abundance of plans that fit any budget and any features you want for your site.   You, therefore, have a very good upgrade path should you need more resources in the future.  Their managed VPS plans are a little more expensive from their competitors, though and offer no root access, the source of many grumblings around the web.
  • Multi-admin - One of the best things we like about Site5 is that they allow you to host multiple websites, each with their own control panel although you have to sign up for their "HostPro + Turbo" plan for this.  This takes on the appearance and functionality of a reseller account, and for the price (in comparison to reseller account costs), this is a great deal.  Of course, you could just go for a reseller plan elsewhere.

What we don't like about Site5

  • No pro-rated refunds - After the initial 45 money back guarantee period is up, you are locked in and cannot get a pro-rated refund.  Unfortunately, they offer large discounts for paying for a longer term.  Paying monthly is costly, which kind of forces you to take the risk.
  • No SSD or SSD accelerated Storage - For a premium host, they are slow to catch on to the latest and fastest technology offered elsewhere.  On a budget host, we wouldn't bat an eyelid about this, but this review has their pricing structure in mind.
  • No addon domains for the cheapest plan - If you wish to host more than one site at Site5 then you need to pay $8.95 per month, which is pretty pricey for what you get.
  • Support can be lacking on occasions (see http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1296561):
Site5 comes up with a different excuse every time the server goes down. The last time it went down, they made suggestions on what I should do for one of the sites being hosted. I followed their suggestions and, went beyond what they suggested and deleted several plugins. There are now fewer plugins being used on the site today than there were when the server crashed in June. However, I've now been told that there are too many plugins being used on the site, and that's what is causing the problem now. Plugins were not an issue in the June crash, yet I deleted a bunch anyway. Now, all of a sudden, plugins are the culprit. So I'm sorry to say, I won't be buying more memory and coming back here to post that I was wrong. And I won't be thanking Site5 for helping to diagnose the issue on my server because they haven't done that. And after reading their support forums, I'm more than convinced that the problem is on their end and not mine.
Unfortunately, when it comes to their support, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Our user reviews show that support response times can be over a week, which is totally unacceptable. Unfortunately, this is something we are seeing across all their hosting brands, which you can find here. Furthermore, if you are looking for a new hosting provider, be sure to select "non-EIG" hosting in the filter.

Site5 Shared Hosting Review

Editor's Expert Opinion

This is definitely one hosting provider to avoid.

Site5 target themselves at Designers & Developers, but unfortunately, despite indications months ago of Site Staging developer features they have failed to deliver.

They are pretty highly priced for what they deliver.  You can get SSD hosting, or SSD accelerated hosting for much cheaper, or if you want all the bells and whistles, you can just go with SiteGround.  These guys may have good comments for reliability, but that is about all they have.

But, probably the worst thing about Site5 that has happened over the last year, is that their support system has gone into meltdown. It is so bad, not just with this hosting provider, but across many of their brands, that even a minor issue that might be resolved in minutes elsewhere could leave your website down for weeks.

Site5 advertise themselves as built for designers and developers, but compared to our top host SiteGround they have very few developer features in comparison. If you are thinking of buying Site5 Hosting, we highly recommend you check out our SiteGround Review and SiteGround Developer features:

Up until end of last year Site5 service was incredible. I had years of excellent support with responses usually within an hour, and fixes took no more than a day. I recommended their services to numerous clients.

Now? Support response up to 24 hours, server uptime sits somewhere around 60%, and fixes take weeks. I've had no access to Advanced DNS (a basic hosting requirement) for over two weeks, with no explanation and no fix in sight.

Since acquisition the company is being ripped apart by a move to cheap servers, reduction of staff and

I had 10+ years of perfect hosting experience with Site5, I loved it! Until End of last year where things started to fail. Uptime was down. Host unavailable. Support took hours to reply.

In March 2016 I even lost a lot of data as the internal backup wasn't working for over a month. Deep in the contract it was stated that backup is only a courtesy and they are not responsible for it. Got no refund. Only excuses.

I can not recommend Site5 anymore.

Pros: nice cpanel/multiadmin
fair pricing

Cons: since end of 2015 failing in support and failing in uptime

Site5 is no longer a hidden gem. They were recently acquired by the same corporation that bought up Hostgator and drove it into the ground. I have had nothing but hassle with Site5 since last Friday when they consolidated their servers and migrated my customer's site. Massive problems ensued and now after a weekend of mess, the whole site is down again and a thirty minute waiting queue on tech support. Tech support also now does the usual (hostgator) thing of putting blame on the customer first instead of seriously looking into the issue right away. This is a sinking ship!

Pros: Used to be incredible. Emphasis on used to be.

Cons: Was acquired by Endurance International Group in 2015.

There is no way on Gods Green earth I would spend another dime with these people.

Pros: no pros at all

Cons: everything you can think of can and will go wrong.. I have been down for 7 days already.

they blame someone else for the issues and even the company they are a domain re-seller for says they could have fixed my issues and yet they still have not.

Site5.com hosting: What a shame that they have adopted of late a really bad we don't care about our customers attitude. Site5 used to be superb and really helpful but today they're just dreadful. You ask them for help and it is immediately obviously they just could not care less about helping their customers full stop.

You ask them to walk you through a problem and they just treat you like you're stupid and come back with an abrupt bog standard answer like they're just copying and pasting them constantly. Indeed, I'm starting to wonder if their customer support staff have all been replaced with robots lately it really is that bad of late. The old time friendliness where they could not do enough to help you as a customer has unfortunately flown out the window.

I will NOT be renewing my hosting with Site5.com again. I know there are better companies out there today who actually value their customers instead of treating them like dirt.

Pros: Used to be absolutely brilliant for customer support and technical help but in the last 12 months their customer support for any technical issues is just completely lousy.

Cons: Costomer support staff members since the fall of 2014 seemed to have adopted we couldn't give a flying crap about you attitude. Extremely unhelpful like it's more thans jobs worth to assist you in a professional manner, even though it is the customers that are paying their wages. I will not renew with them again after being with them for a few years. I don't know what has happened to Site5.com lately but it certainly ain't pretty.

They're now the polar opposite of the fantastic friendly customer support they used to offer like they've forgotten their roots and gone all corporate on everyone. Not good.

I arrived at Site 5 after a long research process. For the money they are the best deal I found for a feldgling dev starting up multiple magento sites. If it gets worse later on, then I will find out. The traffic is a hard one to quite figure out, but I'll see. However, I came from Siteground, and that place was ridiculous, across the board. They should pay the graphic designer a lot, because he makes it look so friendly and mellow. Then you sign up, and they start treating you like they're doing you a favor, plus are lousy at tech support. Their entire sign-up process is atrocious as well, almost as if they are rrying to get you to pay for a year no refunds before you find out had bad they are. I wont say who they are populated by, but its not a great group of people. Still, their location and what I'm reading now makes me wonder.

Pros: support seems quick. Layout of backend features good. They helped with Magmi and other magento issues. Cheap domain sales.

Cons: None I've seen so far except they are based in Arkansas. Dont handle new TLDs.

I have been a customer for more than ten years and will be closing my account. In my opinion, over the past several years, the level of service has gone down hill while the prices have gone up. If you're looking for webhosting, companies with better service and lower prices can be found elsewhere. I've found the support to be very unhelpful. They were great at saying "no." They are also great at repeating "no" if you complain about it. I probably have contracted their support less than once a year in the ten years I've been a customer. The past two or three years, after the service dropped and prices went up, I have complained a few times and even told them I was considering canceling. I explained I had been a customer for more than ten years. I felt like they didn't care AT ALL. I felt like, no loyalty to at all and they didn't care about me at all.

Ironically, after I had already opened an account at another webhost, I went to transfer my sites over, and discovered that my server was down for "maintenance." I was told it would be down from 9pm until 1am, EST on a Friday night. It was actually down until past 2am. This only confirmed by fears.

There is NOTHING unlimited about Site5! Don't fall for that unlimited hosting.
I get anywhere between 700-1,500 viewers a day, site5 told me I using too many resources and would be forced to upgrade to a VPS which runs $70 a month. Many people know it's almost impossible to make that much money with little views. I would get warnings when my views were in the low 500's. I did everything they told me to do such as install countless number of plugs ins.
http://kb.site5.com/scripts/wordpress/wordpress-optimization-tips/

They even have a page http://kb.site5.com/policies-and-information/resource-points/
Where it talks about resources.

After I explained my low views; they went on to say it was SPAM comments. I have the askimit plug in, they told me to install Disqus, I did.
At another point site5 blamed it on my theme. I disabled everything and even shut my site down for a few days and they said I was using too many resources.
The company I use has a chat room dedicated as a help forum. I submitted the question;
"My hosting company said I am using too many resources" and then I went on to list all of the links I am posting here.

The theme company I use were stunned, other members said; "You must have site5, they tried that with me too"
I then uninstalled every theme and used TwentyTen theme -- site5 still told me I was using too many resources.

<b>How does site5 get such good
ratings?</b>

Simple: when you join they offer to switch over everything for you (FTP) and hold your hand through the whole process, they keep checking on you and ask if you need anything so when you are all set up, they then send you a feedback sheet and basically hound you with it -- in a friendly way of course.
Here is another link about site5 point system.

I have used site5 for about 5 years, with very little problems, UNTIL THE LAST 6 MONTHS!

We now have weekly down time and service disruptions&gt; Today it's ALL of the Dallas servers.

Their C/S is largely inept, and can't really help with anything meaningful. Except to say, "We should be back up and running soon, just keep checking the forum for updates"

Worthless,

Am looking for another solution, just trying to figure out what it's going to take to transfer everything to another hosting service..

If you actually need to use your website, DON'T host it with them. They have the worst hosting that I have ever experienced. They try to make up for it with customer service but what good is that when your website barely ever loads. I had trouble with my site performance every day - it was absolutely HORRIBLE!

I was with site5 since 2011, and didn't have any problems 'till end of 2013, when my hosting server start to being listed on "black hole list" ( or something similar)... Well I run a construction company and I am not in computers by any strach of imagination, but my emails were completely blocked ( I couldn't receive or sent first time for about 48 hours, next time for about three days etc, then on April or May my email was blocked for TWO WEEKS!! I had to switch to another host because they couldn't fix....Always same copy and paste answers : our technicians working around clock to fix the problem...... Lousy service, same for customer service, very, very dissapointed......

The service is OK the servers are SLOW and buying domains is an absolute nightmare you have to post a ticket when you buy domains just to have them bought which can take up to 3 days, every 2 days im in support asking and pretty much begging for them to take my money - never met a company like that, stay well clear if not the for the speed of the servers then for the poor sales service and more.

I was actually told by a site5 "Customer Specialist" rep, that they could not provide me with hosting at this time, after failing to setup my account in over 24 hours, i've been a reseller with Site5 for over 6 years, and that comment from their specialist put site5 on my blacklist.. I'm currently scouting around for other resellers, site5 will not host my business and when I was a promoter for site5 for all those past years and I was happy I was with them.. they will not only loose a customer, but I will setup a post with my negative experience and share with the world what it feels like for a hosting company to tell you literally "I'm very sorry, we will not be able to provide you with hosting at this time"!

Waiting more than 24 hours for a shared hosting account and when I say I would go somewhere else if its not setup.. they simply say "go".. Customer Retention? Customer Satisfaction ? uhhh Making a sale?.. This is the service industry and for me their reply was very unsatisfactory, i'm going to be migrating all my customers to another reseller host, and leaving site5 once and forall, if only that agent replied differently...

Btw.. for the site5 guys who would like to check out the ticket IDs are : XTMJ-75983 and LTNG-91335.... I also made a couple of calls to the call center dated jun 21.. if you care to listen to what your customers have to say

I agree that Site5 are very overpriced for what they offer. I used to be with them until I had lots of email problems, and since going to SiteGround I am actually blown away at the difference.

SiteGround are far better than Site5.

After reading all top hosting provider reviews, I'm surprised that Site5 ranks just six. It should rank in top 3 for sure.
They also have integrated Cloudfare: http://kb.site5.com/dns-2/how-to-setup-cloudflare/
With that added, no bandwidth, space or emails limitations and affordable price I believe it beats all the others. I like that they have the latest server features versions and their host pro turbo offers a dedicated IP for $12.95/month which I think is better compared with others.
