The primary consideration for choosing any web hosting provider must be reliability, performance and support. After all, without the whole purpose of your website is undermined.

  • NGINX — This is a high performance web server that can be placed in a reverse proxy to Apache, providing increased performance caching static and dynamic content.

  • PHP 7 — The latest version of PHP is significantly faster than the previous version 5.6, with some benchmarks indicating it can handle nearly double the amount of requests per second.
  • Memcached — This is a memory based caching system that significantly improves the performance of your website by improving the performance of your database calls, API calls and page rendering by storing the data and objects in the server's RAM.

We gave them a spin with a standard (badly optimized) theme we got off Themeforest. We use this theme for our tests, as it amplifies the differences, and is more representative of websites used by every day businesses and bloggers.

We optimized the website using the Static and Dynamic SuperCacher. We removed all third party scripts (social shares analytics) as we wanted to test just the server, not third party scripts that are loaded from other websites.

If something goes wrong, you need to know that someone will be on hand to help you out. Accidentally deleted your website? No problem. Messed Up your WordPress install or trying to work out a. htaccess 301 redirect but cannot get it to work? No problem. They have some of the most helpful, and fast support technicians we have seen.

They have one of the best uptime figures going. They never have problems with their data centers, or have technicians make "mistakes" that cause downtime.

One of the reasons why their Uptime figures are so high is that they have built custom server monitoring software that can automatically resolve 90 percent of issues without human interaction.

They also track their servers in real time, not 1-5 minutes like other hosts. Furthermore, while other hosts can take the time to react to the downtime, you can see how their system can mean vastly less downtime.

As we have said in the past, Uptime Guarantee's are worthless (find out why here), so when a hosting provider actually delivers on their uptime promise, like SiteGround, it is something that must be pointed out.

#4 Managed WordPress Hosting that gives you the best of both worlds.

SiteGround advertise their plans as including "Managed Services on all Plans". While this is correct, you should not mistake it for a fully managed WordPress Hosting Solution like WP Engine, even though it has the majority of features that they offer.

We class "fully managed" WordPress Hosting as something that takes care of absolutely everything for you (security, highly specialized server environment, WordPress Upgrades and more), but on the other hand, will have a large number of restrictions such as no access to the control panel \ server environment, restrictions on what plugins you can use and will often charge by the page view.

SiteGround, as you will read elsewhere in this review has all the things that a Fully Managed WordPress hosting provider has, but none of the negatives. You still get to use the control panel, setup email, install multiple websites and generally have a high degree of control over your hosting environment. 

Plus, if you really want to go mad and utilize some of the latest technologies such as HHVM (the same technology as Facebook uses), then you can do so by a cheap upgrade to their Cloud Hosting, rather than having to pay $1000's per month for an enterprise solution. Of course, PHP 7 + OpCache is great too, and that comes even on SiteGround's StartUp plan.

#5 Site Staging, WP-CLI, Drush & GIT integration, plus other tools make it perfect for developers.

WordPress & Joomla tool kits (all plans) — Automate simple tasks such as resetting admin. passwords, fixing file permission issues, changing the domain address, or just deleting the installation. These tools arose as a result of SiteGround support repeatedly being asked to solve the same questions faced by their customers. #6 Security is taken seriously with patches routinely applied within hours of new exploits becoming known.

For shared web hosting, they are one of the most proactive providers we know for ensuring the security of their servers. While most web hosts rely on third party software such as CloudLinux, the success of SiteGround is due to them creating their own system.

This gives them the talent pool within their organization to adjust and implement changes to new security threats, including rolling out fixes to prevent zero-day exploits (i.e. exploits that have just been discovered) threatening your website.

SiteGround's servers run a system called Hive, which runs under their own brand 1h.com. This has the following features:

  • Account isolation — Their shared hosting is more akin to a VPS hosting environment, in that each account is isolated from the others. Furthermore, the Linux system is modified to disable or change any commands or tools that might be used to hack the system.
  • Hacked website detection — They have developed scripts to check for hacked content so that if the worst does occur, you will be notified. This is their add-on called Hackalert.
  • 1H Hawk Intrusion Prevention System — This will identify any brute force attack (attackers trying to guess your passwords) against your website or services such as email.
  • Monitoring — This is done in real time so that any threats are caught instantly. Furthermore it monitors load, attacks including the network, hacking attempts, spam, abnormal resource usage and irregularities on a server level. This ensures not only is your website secure, but it won't become sluggish due to attacks being made against other users on the server.

While they use cPanel, they have added their own custom styling to tie in with their own branding. Because they have also integrated the control panel with their own website, it is easy to access from your main client area, unlike with many other hosting providers which require you to keep separate login details.

One of the benefit's of SiteGround is that each Shared Hosting Plan has an increasing amount of resources available. The StartUp is sufficient to handle around 25k page views per month, where the GoGeek plan can handle 100k. This means you do not need to upgrade to an expensive Cloud hosting plan until your website becomes really busy.

Are their any downsides to using SiteGround hosting?

There is no doubt about it; SiteGround is our Editor's choice when it comes to shared hosting. That being said, any review would not be complete without looking at some of the negative things we have found. 

#1 Their StartUp plan does not come with their SuperCacher or Premium support.

This is not the end of the world as you still get SSD storage, PHP 7 and OPcache, so using that combination you can still get some impressive speeds.  

Furthermore, even though you do not get premium support, your queries are still dealt with very quickly. In fact, your tickets will still get answered more quickly than pretty much every other hosting provider we know.

But ... we do think their GrowBig plan offers better features and is overall better value.

#2 They charge a setup fee if you want to pay monthly, and you can only pay monthly as a trial for the first month.

It is very common for web hosting to be better value the longer you sign up for. As part of the marketing strategy, the price advertised is usually for their longest billing term. In this case, 12 months.

SiteGround allow you to pay monthly, but you have to pay an extra $14.95 setup fee. Furthermore, after the first month, you will have to pay yearly, but you won't then have access to the 60 percent initial discount.

It gets worse, though. You cannot then get a refund for the setup fee under their money-back guarantee.

If you sign up for their one month trial, you are literally mad. Just get the yearly plan, take the discount AND if you decide they are not for you, just get a FULL refund under their money-back guarantee (free domains are deducted from refund).

In other words, don't make the mistake of signing up for the month's trial.

I can't speak a bad word about SIteground.

When I started my website 5 months ago, I really had no idea what I was doing and I get stuck on every most stupid thing you could imagine! I use the Wordpress chat. These chat-techs are fabulous. The chat picks up VERY quickly, they walk you through what you need until you're absolutely sure you got it, even if you're new and unsure. They don't hurry you with your questions.
There have been times when they've just fixed the problem for me by accessing my site.They also tell me how to address things so they don't happen again. Extremely helpful.

I have switched to siteground nearly 2 years back after reading some good reviews about there support and now I am very much contended with the support they provide I am no a hard core coder so I get stuck in various aspects of debugging my websites but I always gets valuable and very important prompt support from site ground team right now i am having 2 accounts with siteground and am planning shift my other hosting services also to siteground. and its not only the support the up time, the speed is much better as compared to the same service of other providers, I would recommend siteground for every one

I have no regret whatsoever hosting at Siteground,
They have one of the best support team ever. Their Customer Representative is always online to respond to any issue and if the issue is so technical; I have never had to wait up to 15 minutes before the issue is being resolved.

SiteGrounds tech support is the BEST! I have no idea with technology and have contacted loads of companies for various reasons while setting up my new website. I was VERY, VERY excited to switch some of my more important sites over to SiteGround, though ended up switching back to my previous hosting provider in less than 24 hours! I went with the GoGeek level.

Cons:
1.) If you had those domains on CloudFlare already, SiteGrounds support wants you to DELETE your domains in your CloudFlare account, then re-add them via their platform, even though CloudFlare says you do NOT need to do this to have the Railgun switched to theirs.

2.) Was having an issue activating the Let's Encrypt SSL cert on 2 of the sites, so I installed some temporary ones so the sites would work. Had to have tech support try and fix it... and they did on one of the sites, BUT then the site they couldn't fix, they had removed the temp SSL I was using, didn't put it back, and left my site offline (and told me to try it again in an hour)!!!!!!!!!

3.) I'm not a fan of how they do the CPU thing. With my other provider, you get let's say 20% of the CPU dedicated to you, and you can use that 20% all day long, etc. With Siteground, you can only use 4000 seconds/hr - and counts EACH script/site visit, etc, and a max of 40,000/day. While these numbers seem reasonable --- somehow my sites (3 sites - which get about an average of 50 human visitors a day to each site) according to their things was at over 8,500 in a 2 hour period... and I just didn't want to risk them shutting my sites off. Now yes, I was getting a lot of bogus traffic hitting one of my sites from China IP addresses, but still.

4.) One of my sites was giving me a 403 error after switching over to their servers. This was because I mistyped the directory that site was in (oooops). Personally, I like putting the add-on domains into a directory outside of the public_html. When I contacted tech support about the 403 error (because I didn't catch the mistype), they told me that I had to have ALL of my addon domains under the public_html. This was the first experience with their chat tech support people... and each experience that I had with their chat tech support people showed me that the support techs were *very* limited in their knowledge.

Pros:
1.) Overall site load time for each site was about 0.1 to 0.2 seconds faster overall. TTFB though was twice as long (went from about 0.17/0.19 on average to 0.3/0.4 on average). The TTFB I attribute to the Railgun not being activated.

2.) Liked being able to set which PHP version/directory, though the versions of PHP that were available were out of date. PHP 7 was 7.0.17 (and 7.1.3), though PHP 7.0.18 (7.1.4) has been out now for 9 days. PHP 7.1.4 fixed an issue with opCache that was causing an issue for some sites that used certain aspects of JetPack within Wordpress. My previous host had this updated within about 5 days after it was available.

The text of the error message says that you have to deactivate the existing account first in order to open a new one. We have acknowledged via chat that if your domain is entirely managed by CloudFlare, there may be a workaround for transferring an existing service to a new hosting provider and you have agreed to reach out them for further help. We understand that the support you have received on the issue with Let’s Encrypt was not a very good client experience for you. Our agent has made a wrong assumption regarding your request to help with Let’s Encrypt installations for 2 domains. He installed a Let’s Encrypt certificate on the first one, and disabled the existing certificate on the other one because he thought in this way he will enable you to install Let’s Encrypt shortly after that. His reasoning was that your goal is to use Lets’ Encrypt for both domains and he disabled the Cloudflare SSL because for the Let’s Encrypt certificate to work there should be no other SSL on that domain. Our support technician has apologized for the caused downtime and acknowledged his mistake. We’re sorry for the inconvenience again. Please note it’s important for hosts to monitor accounts performance on shared servers and each provider has a different approach to setting limits for fair usage. From our experience over the years measuring processes and CPU activity has turned out to be optimal and we use this method to ensure no single account usage affects negatively the performance of other accounts on the server. In addition, our GoGeek plan, you had signed up for, is our most powerful shared hosting solution and it offers features like dynamic caching that can help with optimizing your site processes. Regarding your chat reporting a 403 error, indeed our representative seems to have misunderstood the cause of the issue and did not give you correct instructions to solve the problem. As you have pointed out the reason for the problem was that when you updated IP address for one of your domains you have not entered “www”. I have been using SiteGround for 3 years, and I am sure it's the best hosting for that price, especially for Magento and Wordpress websites. Great 24hr (really working) friendly support, many ready to set-up in one click features, helpful tutorials. I have never had any problems with my website access, super safe. Not the highest speed on Magento even after all suggested actions, but still quite good. The cost is affordable for this quality and support.

We transferred over to SiteGround in October of 2017 after a website hack.

Since that time, we have been continually surprised and delighted with the speed and assistance of SiteGround's Tech Support.

Recently, we experienced issues with one of the main plugins for our business after a major update. We tried various methods to identify the problem on a staging site (which is incidentally free with SiteGround), without success.

The plugin provider had not been able to assist us after 2 weeks of writing back and forth. And we were growing tired waiting for a reply.

Eventually, we decided to ask SiteGround to cast their expert eyes on the problem. Hey Presto, after 30 minutes, they replied and pinpointed the issue. We should have asked them for help sooner!

Really we can't speak highly enough of their customer service. Yes, you might pay a little more for some of plans, but it is so well worth it. Their customer services goes above and beyond.

I just had another great support experience with Siteground hosting.

I upgraded to PHP 7, but my theme was apparently not working very well with the newest version? So I got blank pages when I wanted to edit some posts, and also could not delete posts, which gave me the same errors.

As I'm not a techie, staring at at blank page can be very frustrating. Especially if you have a lot of posting to do and schedule them. But only one support ticket and 18 minutes later, all is fixed and operating fine again.

Since I had a few other hosting providers before finding Siteground, I can not express how valuable good support is. And Siteground is just AWESOME at it! I can't recommend them highly enough.
