1and1 Internet, or 1&1 Internet, began as a small German company in 1988, founded by Ralph Dommermuth. It took over T-Online's marketing activities, which was a T-Com service that was run online. 1&1 expanded into the UK in 2000 offering its hosting service internationally. It quickly established itself as a leading web host provider to private users and small to medium sized business. In 2003, it further expanded web hosting service to the U.S.A.
1&1's new Virtual Server Cloud uses VMware virtualization to ensure you get the full resources allocated to your plan, and comes with SSD storage, choice of Linux or Windows, and full root access. It is a relatively new service, having been launched in September 2016.
Before purchasing their VPS, you may wish to consider also their Dynamic Cloud Servers, which offer full management, hot-add resize and the ability to fine tune your setup, to even include load balances if you wish to distribute your load over several servers.
Editor's note: Looks good on paper, but their Dynamic cloud looks better, especially as you can opt for cPanel control panel.

1&1 Expert VPS Review 2017
This looks like a really great web hosting provider, at least on paper. However, troubling reports about their support are filtering through which may make you think twice about using them.
We couldn't really find much feedback around the web specifically about their new VPS Plans (launched late 2016), but on paper the VPS plans look very reasonable.
The pricing appears to be more akin to an unmanaged VPS, but they do offer support so this makes them quite good value, especially with our introductory offer.
A Look at some of the key features
#1 Full Root Access
There is a growing trend for VPS or Cloud servers that offer any kind of support to restrict access to Root. Fortunately, 1and1 are not included, and you have full root access to enable full control over the entire Operating System, and software.
#2 SSD Storage
SSD hosting is an essential feature when choosing a provider as it has some significant advantages, and the costs of providing SSD storage have reduced dramatically over the last year or two making it much more affordable.
SSD storage is significantly faster than traditional storage, not only in throughput, but in latency too. In fact, when a server is under a high load (common with web hosting services), the impact of SSD's are even more pronounced.
You can read more about the benefits of SSD Hosting here.
#3 VMware Virtualization
VMware is quite sophisticated in that it increases the reliability of the overall hosting infrastructure, as in the event of hardware failure, services are automatically restored in secondsby switching to other hard components.
#4 24/7 Customer Service
Their technicians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for any questions regarding setting up or operating your server.
While support is included, doubts have been raised over its quality. We discuss this in a little more detail later in this 1and1 VPS review.
#5 Plesk ONYX
1and1 uses Plesk, a very respectable and popular control panel for web hosting (in particular Windows Hosting). If you prefer cPanel, then take a look at their Cloud Hosting where that is an option.
You can try a demo of Plesk by clicking the "Live Demo" button here. A screenshot of the control panel is below:
#6 Choice of Linux/Windows
Both Linux and Windows operating systems are available on their VPS.
Our cloud platforms use only the highest quality state-of-the-art components from brands like HP, Intel, SolidFire and F5 Networks. Our goal is to make our products as fail-safe as possible and thus guaranteeing at least 99.9 percent availability and meaning your servers and business run smoothly.
#8 Choice of Data Center
You now have the option of creating and holding all virtual machines and other server components mentioned in your contract, in different data centers within Europe and the USA
1&1 offers two options for creating a server backup on both Windows and Linux:
Firstly, you can use the "professional backup" feature already included in your vServer to secure your data.
Alternatively, for a premium, you can create images of your server on seperate storage.
#1 Reports of some bad support
A quick look around the web, including the user reviews left by our readers above (and on our reviews of their other services) are awash with complaints.
Particular complaints surround their billing practices, including sending small invoices to collection agencies, sending out bills for canceled products, and even adding products to your account without consent (informing you that if you don't want it you can cancel it).
They do have a Twitter help channel, but this too features many billing complaints:;
I've purchased a domain from @1and1help 15 hours ago and they charged me twice for it.But what! the domain was just bought by someone else !— yiğit can bacakoğlu (@ycbacakoglu) March 17, 2017
To be fair though, their is some praise of the 1and1 support on Twitter too, so we suspect their support is hit and miss, with their billing practices causing many of the issues.
#2 No cPanel option
While Plesk is a great control panel, many webmasters tend to stick with a certain control panel that they are familiar with. As cPanel is the most popular, the fact that it is not available might be an issue to some. If you require cPanel, and you really want to host with 1and1 then we recommend checking out their Cloud Servers where that is an option.
You can read more about the differences between Plesk and cPanel here.
#3 No live chat support
Live chat can be a very quick and convenient way to access support. While you can telephone their support or submit a ticket, the lack of live chat may be an issue for some.
