Hostnine Cloud Reviews

Like so many other web hosting providers purchased by EIG, a great web host has been turned incredibly bad. One to avoid.

We first took note on how bad things had become, after the Arvixe migration debacle (another company that EIG bought), and how there was a total break down in the support provided by Arvixe, lost files, broken website resulting in the sacking of the majority of the Arvixe staff.

This seems to be the breaking point of many EIG brands, and in Hostnine's case, their team became directly responsible for cleaning up the Arvixe mess. As you can imagine, at that time, things has got so bad (support response times in excess of a week) that Hostnine was always going to face a losing battle.

This is a real shame, as their Cloud Hosting plans were some of the best around, representing superb value for money with high resource allocations. We used their Cloud on many occasions ourselves, and as such were very disappointed when they were purchased by EIG, although with the old management staying on at the company for a while, the deterioration was much slower than with say, Arvixe.

Editor's note: We hate to be negative about hosting providers, especially when we have past dealings with them, but for the time being we recommend you avoid EIG owned hosting providers. Fortunately, you can filter out all EIG-owned hosting providers in our Hosting Review tables.

Hostnine offers some of the best value Managed VPS Plans around with their recent pricing structure proving hard to beat.  As an example you can now get a 2 CPU with 2GB RAM, along with 60GB SSD storage for just $24.99 per month, $21.99 per month if you pay yearly.  Plus, with our Hostnine Coupons, you can get at least 15 percent off your first invoice as well. At most other reputable hosting companies you cannot even come close to this value.

But with Hostnine, it is not just about the price.  Hostnine have repeatedly demonstrated first class support, and will go above and beyond what most other providers will do, and even if you need something doing over and above their Managed Hosting, their hourly rate for custom support is around $30 per hour, over half what other hosting providers charge.  But don't worry about having to pay extra for support, as they will carry out many tasks for you as part of their Managed support which comes inclusive.  We had them setup NGINX as a reverse proxy as well as do things like install third party backup scripts for us.

What we like about Hostnine VPS

  • Great Support — One of the main things we like about Hostnine is their excellent support. We host this website with Hostnine, as well as many others, and have always found them to go to great lengths to help with things. As we have mentioned, this website is hosted on their VPS which is fully managed and they were very helpful with setting up custom scripts and giving advise generally when needed.
  • Telephone Support — If you live in the US, you can get support during office hours during the week by telephone.
  • Great Price — For the support you get, and the fact it is a fully managed plan, Hostnine's prices are phenomenal.
  • Extremely Reliable — Hostnine's servers are fast, and we have had virtually no downtime on this website. The VPS runs on a redundant cloud setup with automatic fail-over protection.
  • High quality servers — The VPS is powered by dual Intel Xeon Hex (6) Core processors at 2.5Ghz w/HyperThreading for a total of 24 CPU Cores per hardware node.
  • SSD — In what is now becoming the industry norm for premium VPS plans, Hostnine's VPS is powered by Solid State Drives in Raid-50 which is up to 136 times faster than standard cloud environments.
  • Free Migration — Hostnine will happily help you move your existing VPS over to them, which can save you a lot of time an effort.
  • Customizable Plans — Whilst you can choose the specifications you need via their slider when you sign up, you can buy additional resources as needed to top up those plans, including priority CPU usage, and additional IOPS. Toggle the Full Features link below for full details, including pricing.

Hostnine VPS Hosting Plans

Hostnine have a whole range of plans (eight) that you can configure by using their slider. In addition, you can buy additional resources for any of those plans, making their VPS hosting extremely configurable. You can see an example of one of their plans below:

hostnine vps reviews

Whilst this shows an impressive 4 CPU core setup, you can get 2 CPU cores with 2GB RAM for just $30 per month, or $25 per month if you pay yearly.

Our Recommended Hostnine VPS Configuration

When you sign up for a Hostnine VPS you will need to choose an Operating System Template. Hostnine have dozens of different templates to choose from, including a full NGINX setup if you are comfortable with the command line.

Our recommendation, both for ease and compatibility is the CentOS 6.4 x64 cPanel (PHP 5.6) operating system.  Once you are setup, open a ticket to Hostnine Support and ask them to set up NGINX as a Reverse Proxy for you.  This will setup caching for your static (and even dynamic (PHP cache)) assets to increase website speed and performance.  You can them manage the NGINX configuration via the command line using "nginxctl".  It is relatively simple to use, and a good guide about it can be found on A Small Orange's knowledgebase (Sister company to Hostnine).  We recommend setting up NGINX to utilize the RAM, as this is much faster by doing "nginxctl -t".    You may want to play around with the settings a little once NGINX is setup.

Do we recommend Just Host? No.

There are just too many reports of bad service, slow support and unreliability among EIG hosting providers as a whole.

We don't say this lightly; Avoid this web hosting provider.

I writing this review to literally save you thousand of dollars by signing up with this company. they have the worse customer service and their VPS and hosting services are not reliable at all. Our VPS server has been unavailable for several days now and they haven't been able to figure out the problem after 4 days. we have lost important clients and thousand of dollars in transactions so we are consulting with our attorney how to make them pay for all the losses; anyways, I'm trying to save you time and money so don't even consider them as a service provider. Good luck

Pros: NONE

Cons: YOU WILL END UP LOSING YOUR CLIENTS AND LOTS OF MONEY

Our server has been down for days, with no end in sight. No information is even provided, typical cookie cutter responses.

Just plain horrible, no website and worse of all no emails for the last 4 days. Who knows how much this is costing our company.

STAY AWAY!!!

Pros: Inexpensive, full Cpanel, WHM included in monthly plans.

Cons: Slow, Goes down more than other hosts I've used (Currently I'm experiencing a 4 day blackout with no ETA on when the server is getting back online).

There uptime is one of the worst for any hosting company I have used over the past 15 years. Just disgusting and terrible!! STAY AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE!

Pros: Their online chat is great. People answer normally within a few minutes.

Cons: I have been with these guys for about a year and used to have 10 VPS servers. Over the past 6 months, their servers have gotten worse and worse. They pretty much go down every month. I have moved three servers so far and will be moving the rest over the next couple of months. Their hosting techs don't have a clue how to run a data center. This much downtime is unacceptable.

The features are nice! thought quite different from a standard cPanel WHM but its still good.

However, during my 4 months trying their service, whenever a critical issue comes in...their support is super mega slow as in will take more than 24 up to even days of without ticket movement.

I appraise their live chat but I hope they can someday improve their Turn around time..coz it really sucks ....

and Id suggest that improve on how they should categorize critical issues and priority.

I have been familiar with web hosting plans for a long time, but Hostnine was the first time I felt brave enough to order a VPS server.

I originally just bought the Hostnine VPS to try it out and test out many of the things I didn’t want to do on a live production server. I chose Hostnine because I was already a customer of theirs and was very happy with the support that they offered, so choosing Hostnine was a natural choice. In addition, I didn’t want to spend much on what was to be a test server, and fortunately Hostnine offer one of the cheapest managed VPS plans around.

Throughout the couple of months of testing I have had no downtime expect for the occasional reboot in the morning. I am told that if I order the Splice addon for a couple of dollars then all the updates currently requiring a reboot will not longer need it, and my uptime should be 100% instead of 99.9%. I will be ordering this soon, now I have made the decision to move my production websites to the VPS.

The biggest thing though is the support. They are incredibly helpful, and even helped me setup Nginx as a Reverse proxy during my testing phase, and I must say the speeds are phenomenal. Without a doubt, I would highly recommend them!

I decided to post a review because the server for the website that I am attempting to work on is once again unavailable. I’ve been using hostnine for many years. Its the fist company I’ve used since I started in the web design business. That was a very big mistake. I’ve lost so many customers because of unreliable support, site suspensions, billing errors and down time. There is some great support staff, while others are completely lazy or inept, I’m not sure which it is. One time there was a huge hardware failure. There was an entire node that went out, including the backups. As a result I was forced to rebuild 3 entire websites because I mistakenly trusted there were back ups. They didn’t even apologize. I moved on to a different service. So far, I’m a lot happier. I still never to get over 50 sites along with several VPS setups done. Several of the VPS setups are a real pain. I really wish that I had done some extra research before I chose that company.
