Like so many other web hosting providers purchased by EIG, a great web host has been turned incredibly bad. As well as reading our User Reviews at the end of this review, you may want to check our Shared Hosting User Reviews about A Small Orange as well.

We first took note on how bad things had become, after the Arvixe migration debacle (another company that EIG bought), and how there was a total break down in the support provided by Arvixe, lost files, broken website resulting in the sacking of the majority of the Arvixe staff. This has relevance to A Small Orange, as it was their support and management team that was charged with picking up the pieces. As you can imagine, at that time, things has got so bad (support response times in excess of a week) that A Small Orange was always going to face a losing battle.

Unfortunately, the policy of EIG to move all their ticket support to India has been, and unfortunately, still is a disaster.

Editor's note: We hate to be negative about hosting providers, especially when we have past dealings with them, but for the time being we recommend you avoid EIG owned hosting providers. Fortunately, you can filter out all EIG-owned hosting providers in our Hosting Review tables.

A Small Orange Cloud Hosting Review

A Small Orange Cloud Hosting Plans — 8 Plans to choose from

On paper, the A Small Orange Cloud hosting plans are very good value, with some great specifications. Historically (2014 \ early 2015), they were very highly thought off, and these plans were extremely popular. We even used them ourselves.

However, the question now is whether you are happy to put up with the downtime and bad support. We suspect not, but we will talk about this in further detail later.

Core Storage RAM Bandwidth Price
1 30 GB 1 GB 500 GB $20
2 50 GB 2 GB 1 TB $30
2 75 GB 3 GB 1.5 TB $45
4 100 GB 4 GB 2 TB $60
4 125 GB 5 GB 2.5 TB $75
6 150 GB 6 GB 3 TB $90
8 200 GB 8 GB 4 TB $120
8 250 GB 10 GB 5 TB $150

The plans have the following features (at least, this is what is claimed):

  • Enterprise grade hardware - A Small Orange are a brand of EIG. They are one of the few companies that own their own data centers.
  • Free migration assistance - They offer free migration if you are transferring from a web host that uses cPanel
  • Free backups - Free on-demand backups are available, plus automated weekly backups.
  • Automatic failover - They have automatic failover and hot migration tools to increase reliability.
  • Network Safeguarding - Their network is resilient to DDoS attacks. This may not help if you are the target, but at least should not cause your site to suffer if other users have been targeted.
  • KVM based Cloud based VPS - Powered by Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) virtualization technology
  • Detroit and Dallas Datacenters - Unfortunately, you cannot choose which data center.
  • Firewalls for security - The last time we used ASO Cloud in 2015, they were using the APF firewall.
  • Free cPanel (Level II plans or better) - One of our favorite control panels. You can read more about cPanel here.

4 Reasons to use A Small Orange Cloud VPS Hosting for your website or Blog

#1 cPanel & WHM make management of your websites simple

A Small Orange has a rather smart Client area for support and billing, and gives you access to their extensive knowledgebase and video tutorials.

For the management of the website, they use the industry standard cPanel and WHM, along with a few great additions such as PHP selector, Pagespeed Optimizer, CloudFlare one-click install, SiteLock security, R1Soft backups access, as well as their Ghost Installer (via Softaculous).

#2 NGINX stack upon request

They offer a standard NGINX configuration which they will happily install upon request (this needs to be done via a support ticket). Their NGINX installation is a Reverse Proxy configuration which makes it very easy to manage. You can read the full instructions to manage the NGINX installation here.

It has the following features:

  • cPanel, LAMP and LEMP stack compatible, using transparent reverse proxy implementation
  • Optimized gzip compression of all content reduces bandwidth usage
  • Static content (images/media files) cache to improve page load time and reduce request load on Apache
  • Open file descriptor cache for high performance access to frequently used content
  • Dynamic page caching can be enabled on a per-user basis with configurable expiration time, reducing Apache & MySQL load
  • High performance threading and cache structure allows for increased resilience to sudden traffic increases or HTTP based DDoS attacks
  • Zero downtime configuration changes applied in real time for no service disruption, such as adding/removing users to nginx dynamic content cache

#3 Easily Upgradable

If you ever need to upgrade, or downgrade, you can do so from within your client area in just a few clicks.

#4 Node.js and Ghost Blogging Platform Support

They are one of the few companies that offer this kind of support on a Shared Server. Ghost is an upcoming blogging platform that is quickly gaining traction. You can read more information in our review here, including instructions for setting up Ghost blogging platform.

What are the negatives of using A Small Orange Cloud Hosting?

#1 Extremely slow, terrible support

As mentioned in the introductory paragraph at the top of this review, A Small Orange's support has become a disaster zone since it was taken over by EIG, especially after the Arvixe migration debacle where they had to take responsibility for dealing with that mess.

Ultimately, the complaints (and there are many of them) boil down to the following issues:

  • Unresponsive live-chat
  • No telephone support
  • No responses to email or tickets

This means that any issues you have with the server or your website are amplified. Where a company such as SiteGround will respond to tickets in 10 minutes, and deal with any issues straight away resulting in any downtime or other issues being kept to an absolute minimum, A Small Orange may not respond for over a week.

You are strongly advised to look at the User Reviews at the end of this review, but also, just take a look at some of the following tweets directed at @smallorange:

#2 Account suspensions without notice

There are multiple reports on Twitter of ASO suspending accounts of its users. Coupled with the slow customer support, rectifying any issues can take considerable time.

Do we recommend A Small Orange Cloud?

A small orange bad supportNo.

No matter how great they look, or good value they seem, our readers have reported severe issues with their support and reliability.

You only have to check out the rating over time graph in the dashboard at the top of this page and read the user reviews below to see how their acquisition by EIG has caused severe quality issues.

Sure, on paper, the SSD optimized servers and pricing look great, and as a previous customer of A Small Orange they did work very well when we used them back in 2014 \ 2015. Unfortunately, if something goes wrong, or you need help you may find none available. If your website is offline due to that issue, then you may find your website offline for many days, if not weeks.

We don't say this lightly; Avoid this web hosting provider.

A Small Orange used to be good until they were bought out. The service is horrible and the uptime is terrible. My site is completely down for the second time this month due to them having problems handling their VPS’s. The first time it was a short blip, maybe the site was down for an hour.
This is the second time and my site has been down for over 24 hours now. I have no timeline on when the issue will be fixed. I should have switched LONG, LONG, before I let it get to this point, but I didn’t. This is THE WORST hosting provider that I’ve ever had to work with.
I wouldn’t host my website here even it was free. The money I would lose due to downtime would be much more expensive than any other provider in the world.
+ PROS: None anymore

First attempt at a VPS. Never got set up because it never left pending status. Bluehost had me up and running in a couple of hours.
+ PROS: None, VPS never left pending status.
- CONS: VPS Order said 24 hours, a week later still in pending. Opened support ticket, no response a week later. Online chat sat in open window that said 5 minutes, then any minute and an hour later, gave up because no response. Signed up with bluehost, had VPS ready to go within a couple of hours.

After EIG purchase, ASO has become one of the worst webhost I have ever used.

Pros: Decent feature-set. If it worked...

Cons: We purchased a medium sized VPS. Their constant excuse for crashes was, "You are using too much memory." Alright, I can accept that, so I would upgrade, same deal. I eventually tired of long support waits, and non-stop downtime. I switched to another host with the EXACT same specs, we never have down-time. Let me clarify. We switched to another host with exactly the same specs purchased as ASO, and we run twice as many sites now with no down time. ASO are bullshitters of the highest degree. Thank EIG. Any web-host they buy is destroyed within a year.

I came on board to ASO 2 years ago. Their service and support rocked and I was totally pleased. Earlier this year, things started slowing down. Their support began to dwindle. I just noticed that towards the end of the year, even their SUPPORT Phone Number had been taken off the site.

Live chat is now a joke, you need to fill out a form when you have an issue with their service. Which is fine if they're going to answer the flippin' ticket. Instead, the copy and paste their responses. I had a request about my server different than what is was about when it was down, they simply copy and pasted a response to my ticket and it had nothing to do with the issue at hand.

I also noticed that my server had intermittent down time. I would receive an email from site monitor ( pingdom.com ) that I had down time. With this year, I had 48 times that it showed me that I had down time. Most were a few minutes, some were about an hour and it wasn't until December 2015.. nearly a week straight... twice. The beginning week and the last week....

They're a waste of your money... STAY AWAY.

If you don't mind wasting money, by all means, join their company.

I had a similar issue to a few of the other posters. I did my homework prior to going with ASO comparing them to other hosting providers. I went out of my way to set up an account with them because of their customer service. When I set up my account (over a year ago) the service was amazing and trouble shooting issues was also extremely easy with their system. I am not familiar with running a VPS so their help was very appreciated.

Now, their chat system is very laggy, if you time out, it will close the chat all together and you're waiting in queue again for 3-20min. The support staff is very rude, to the point and act as if they're incapable of answering anything or assisting with small issues. DNS issues being rerouted to a ticket to support? You're telling me that a support tech can't check settings during a chat?

They're very hands off now and the entire experience is starting to feel a lot like it was with Fatcow. Maybe the experience is different for those who pay the extra $15 a month for "priority" support.

In regards to the downtime, 7-11 days is a long time for a server to be down. Especially for a design agency that is a reseller for their service. In that time frame we had to deal with many upset clients about their sites/email being down in addition to our own email being down.

I wanted some sort of credit for that time we were down. Couldn't find a number anywhere. Everything leads to their ticketing system. The ticket was in for nearly 2 weeks before anyone answered it and they said "You're service has been up for the past 7 days. If you're still having issues please advice." It didn't address my concerns or acknowledge the issue was entirely on them and didn't make any attempt to smooth the inconvenience over.

I am extremely disappointed with ASO right now and there's really no way to tell them that. Except to put tickets in that they get around to answering in two weeks.

Pros: Great Value
Easy to set up and manage.

I've had a small orange for well over a year and 9 months. I am now leaving them after my server was down for 11 days straight with no information besides "we're working on it". Proof: https://status.asmallorange.com/?id=590

Talked to them about Guaranteed Uptime but everything but my VPS was included.

Pros: Fast server
CPanel included

Cons: Downtime 1-2 times a month (last 9 months)
11 days of straight downtime over Christmas
Long wait for support agent (when it works)
No way to call them

Their VPS is not reliable. Very poor servers and experience over the past year with my sites going down every two weeks at best and every day at the worst.

Pros: They have 24 hour live support chat. They can help with most things.

Cons: I have had a VPS plan for about two years. The first year was fine but the last year I have had so many issues with my servers going down. I wouldn't wish this on any of you. If you like having a website that is online then I don't recommend using their VPS plan. At the same time, I have had a shared hosting plan with them and it hasn't gone down.

Up until recently, ASO was my go to web hosting company. It wasn't the pricing, features or speed (which were all good) but the customer service that was simply exceptional.

That customer service has been harder and harder to come by in the last few months. Not sure if they've been sold or are outsourcing their lower tier servers but the support I loved has waned in 2015.

Pros: Exceptional customer service

Decent VPS pricing and options

Branding is on point

Cons: Waning support

Less than 95% uptime in 2015 (a far cry from the 99.99% they purport)

They've changed their chat and support interface which makes it next to impossible to talk to someone.

Avoid - constant maintenance for hours at a time.

Pros: Our site time improved vs media temple.

Cons: Constant downtime and system maintenance. Site down for hours twice this month for "maintenance". Amateur.
If you want your site to actually be online consistently go somewhere else.
Their "99.9%" uptime guarantee only applies to cheap accounts. We've consistently been way below that and they don't ever do anything about it.

Overall PRetty Good.

Pros: I’ll start with the positive because there’s a lot to like about A Small Orange. The customer service is generally excellent. Also, my website sometimes has huge spikes in traffic, and ASO has been able to handle those spikes while other hosts have failed. For VPS plans, ASO expects you’ll have a tech background, but if you run into some issues with migration as I did, the customer service team will quickly help you resolve those issues.

Cons: Now for the negative. A Small Orange advertises a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee, but it should be noted that this only applies to shared hosting plans. ASO wants you to believe that you’ll have even better uptime with VPS, but that has not been my experience. I have had several outages (from one to four hours) in recent months, and when I contacted customer support, they told me VPS plans are excluded from their uptime guarantee. If there is an outage, VPS customers are last in line to have service restored. ASO’s response was that I could pay an extra $25 to $100 per month for a faster response to outages. I found that highly disappointing.
